You need to have the vacuum cleaned out. If you are good with tools, just remove the motor and fans assembly, take the fans off and wash them. Brush ALL dirt out of the housing and reassemble. Your Electrolux dealer can do this but it isn't cheap. I used to be the service manager for my area. Since it isn't under warranty, you can have ANY reliable vacuum cleaner shop give a good cleanout. NEVER put anything into the cleaner to make it smell good. Electrolux cleaners get their power by having a straight through suction. The air goes through the motor. Adding smelly things can crystallize onto the motor and burn it out.

It's 5 years old and I vacuum twice a week about 900 sq ft. It is starting to smoke and the belt sounds like it's working overtime. The hose is fine. The bag is continuing to fill up. The floor...

Make sure that the dirt bag is empty and that the motor bearings are good. Also check for any debris that may be gumming up motor bearings and forcing it to run slow.

You also can check out the motor brushes and replace them.

Kenmore Powermate power head not working

I've got the same problem. Try checking out the electrical connection where the hose attaches to the canister. The hot male terminal is corroded and the female socket is burned out. Its an unfortunate design flaw that every time you open the vacuum to replace the bag the electrical connection disconnects and reconnects. Not sure if I can find replacement parts for a 10 year old vacuum or if a home-made re-wiring job is in order. Will find out tomorrow.

Tearing bags very frequently. This vacuum is used by three different professional janitors, and all have the same problem. The bag tears or pulls away from the lip very often.

We don't see Oreck problems very often on these pages, probably because their essential simplicity leaves very little that can possibly go wrong. However, your remark that this machine is used by professional janitors leaves me wondering if whoever made the purchasing decision took into account the type of use it would get. You may need a machine that's better suited to the job.
