Could be the transmission shift solenoids.
I've replaced dozens and so far, that was the problem every time.

2001 honda xr200 6th gear

Most likely cause of not selecting a single gear is a bent shift fork.
Shift forks in motorcycles are what pushes the gears in and out on the shaft to engage them. Rough shifting or missing gears can sometimes cause them to bend.
Replacing them, however, requires removing and completely re-building the engine as the shift forks are right inside.
Alternatively it could be a damaged shift drum, but again it's a case of remove engine, split motor in half and have a look.
For a look at the gearbox itself, go to http://www.boltonmotorcycles.com/find/unit/8488
and select 'Transmission' and 'Shift Drum/Fork'

I've got a 1996 Kawasaki ZX6R. The bike runs great. However, it will shift down into first gear, but won't shift up past neutral. Any thoughts? Thanks, Lance

The bike has a bent shift fork. The engine must come out then gets flipped upside down to remove the bottom half of the crankcase. This allows access to the gears and shift forks. The repair is not recommended for the home mechanic. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_211.gif

I have a Kawasaki zx550A1 (GPz550), it shifts into 1st and 2nd just fine but won't shift any higher. It's almost like there is no more gears.

The bike has a bent shift fork in the transmission. You describe the classic symptoms. The engine will have to come out of the frame. Then it gets flipped upside down, right and left side covers, shift shaft, and other components are removed, then the bottom half of the gearbox is removed. This allows access to the shift drum and shift forks. There are some special tools needed and I don't recommend a novice mechanic tackles the job. Below is a diagram of how the shift drum moves the shift forks left and right to make a slider gear engage different gears. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_119.gif

Transmission will not downshift without force

You have a bent shift fork. The engine needs to be removed from the frame then the bottom half of the engine center case gets separated from the top half. This allows access to the gears, shift drum and shift forks. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Hard to change into 1 st and 2nd gear . quickshifter fitted . does engine have to come out to work at gearbox

Remove the quick shifter and see if the shifting problem is still there. If so, you have a bent shift fork. Yes, the entire engine comes out and then the bottom case half is removed to gain acess to the gears and shift forks.

Cant shift in my 88 crx

I would recommend flushing the tranny fluid. you could go with GM synchromesh fluid found at the GM dealer and it will make the shifting buttery smooth. I use this all the time. appx 2 quarts.
