Hi David,
My name is Mike, I'll walk you through it. If at any point you would like clarification, just ask. OK?

  • Click Start
  • If there is a Printers selection, Click it.
  • If not, Click Control Panel, Then Click Printers.
  • Find the icon for the problem printer. Right Click it.
  • Click Delete. If it doesn't let you, stop here and tell me what it says.
  • Next we will uninstall the software
  • Click Start
  • Click All Programs
  • Find the HP Software, see if there is an Uninstall Option and Click it. If there is no Uninstall we will take another route.
Let me know when you are ready for more (the re-install)
Mike

    David,

The Printers option doesn't show on every Start Menu. Choose the Control Panel option in the Start menu. You will find the Printers Icon.

From there we can Uninstall, then re-install the software.

    David,

I know where you are getting lost. My version of XP is the same as yours (and a little different from the normal). The assumptions made by some of the experts don't take these differences into account and can be frustrating. I also have an HP Photosmart printer. I've been through it too. I can help.

I do remote support all the time, I'll get you through it step by step.
When we're done, people will come to you for advice. Hope you see this to respond.

    Mike

    Hi David,

Mike here. Lets start from here, Ignore previous comments. I'll repost the necessary procedures. Troubleshooting difficult problems is as much ruling out possibilities as it is searching for a cause. We're going to do both.

To do this, I need some additional info, If you could confirm or clarify the the following:

    • When you installed the drivers, the printer USB cable was not connected until the installation software prompted you to connect it.

    • Your printer is wired directly to your computer using USB cable. (No hubs, not wireless)

    • What is the size of your hard drive? (Right click the drive icon in My Computer and select Properties. It will show a pie chart. I'm looking for Capacity)

    • Same place, What is the available space?

    • Are any errors displayed during startup? When Printing?

    • What software are you using to print?
The answers to these questions will help in troubleshooting your problem.

Now lets rule out half the possibilities:
The first test I want you to run will determine if the problem is in the hardware or the software. This is done through the printer console by generating a self-test page and timing how long it takes to print.

The time measurement does not have to be exact. The average time to
    print a self-test is 30 seconds.

    1. Load the printer with plain, white paper.

    2. Press
      Setup
      on the control panel.

    3. Press the down arrow until Print Report
      is selected, and then press
      OK
      .

    4. Press the down arrow until Self-Test Report
      is selected, and then press
      OK
      .

    5. Begin timing when the paper feed rollers start pulling in the paper to
start printing, not when the first noises come from the product. Stop
timing when the printed page falls into the paper tray.

    If
the test page prints in less than or close to 30 seconds, the product
    hardware is working correctly.

Get back to me with the results or any questions. We proceed from there.
    Mike

Hello old fellow,
I don't think you would understand all above / below Computer technical instructions properly. thus, I would advise you to call a computer literate person from neighborhood and ask him to install the printer. Thank you.

Right-click the printer you use and click 'properties'

If there are no printers under the printer list, you need to install a printer.

  • In Start, Settings, Printers, click the printer driver with the right mouse button, Details, Spool Settings, change Spool Data Format settings from RAW to EMF or vice versa.
  • In the Spool Settings, select Print directly to printer.
  • In Port Settings, try unselecting everything that is check-marked.
  • Run a virus scan.
  • Use one of the built-in Microsoft drivers.
  • Download the latest version of the product driver from http://www.hp.com.
  • Temporarily close the interfering program for printing purposes. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to open the Close Program window. Highlight any fax/answering machine program listed and select End Task. Repeat this process for each program listed that may interfere with the printing process. Try again to print. If printing is successful, the program(s) closed was interfering with the printing process. Uninstall or deactivate it.
  • Remove temporary files in C:TEMP and C:WINDOWSTEMP.

Can you make copies on model D7460 HP Printer

Unfortunately no, there is no scanner bed so it cannot make copies. This printer is primarily for printing photos and plain paper docs. See Amazon's original review on this product in 2007: http://www.amazon.com/HP-D7460-Photosmart-Printer/dp/B000SNP0RW

NOTE: Our Inkjet411 printer/cartridge support site provides technical tips for for 4000 printer models and includes over 80 videos for do-it-yourself printer remedies and corrections: http://inkjet411.com/

To refill your own inkjet ink cartridges, refer to our Refill Store Map Locator (over 600 retail store locations in North America): http://www.go2ris.com/#retailpartners

The error message is Oxc18a0001. What is wrong with it. I've turned the printer off like it said to do, with no change.

Error seen on printers HP: HP Photosmart 7280, C5180, C6280, HP photosmart 8250...

    Solution 1:

    1. Press and hold "left arrow" key
    2. Press the "setup" key and release both keys
    3. Press and release the "OK" button
    4. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says "System Configuration Menu". 2. Press and release the "OK" button.
    5. Display should say "Hardware failure status". If not there already, Arrow Key over to "Hardware failure status",
    6. Press and release the "OK" button.
    7. Display should say "Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear".
    8. Press and release the "OK" Button. Message changes to "Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue".
    9. Press and release the "CANCEL" button as many times as necessary, so that, either the "Welcome to Photosmart Express" screen appears, or, the "Ink System Failure" screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
    10. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
    11. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
    12. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message "USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER" followed by "PRESS OK TO CONTINUE". Press OK.
    13. If the printer has already initialized, then go to the next step. If not, the printer will start the "ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS". Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
    14. To verify printer functionality print a SELF TEST PAGE. If SELF TEST prints, then printer is ready for use or Software Installation.
    15. If the error is still there, or reoccurs the printer is already defective.

I have a d7460 hp printer and the magenta ink cartridge is empty, but I need to print something very important by tomorrow morning and it won't print. It says that it's "unhealthy" to print in...

From your printer properties, go to the "Printing preferences" button on the "General" tab. On the "Color" tab, select "Print in grayscale". That should take care of it for ya.

    HP D7460

I went to the HP online help chat. I was told to take out all the cartridges, wipe a moist cotton cloth on the copper dots on the back of each. Let them dry a minute. Unplug printer cable, and USB cable (if it's not wireless), and unplug from wall. Then hold in power button for 60 seconds. Then I uninstalled HP software and reinstalled. Then I plugged back in the printer cable, and now there are no blank pages. It was quite an ordeal chatting with the rep because it took FOREVER between messages, but all is well now.
