Problem with Garmin Nuvi 200

My GPS will not charge while operating and will not operate while charging. Every-time I plug into an external power source, the screen goes black and a picture of computer appears. It will only operate when running off battery charge, which is a real pain becasue the battery will only hold a charge for about 3 hours and I travel long distances with my job.

Please advise,

Hold the battery icon for 8 seconds, which will take you to the test screen then plug in the charger then exit This works on a nuvi 200w.

You might be using a generic charger, it requires something like 4 or 5 volts, otherwise it thinks it's a USB connection . Just unplug it, when it starts to boot up plug it back in real quick, or hold the battery icon for 8 seconds, which will take you to the test screen, then just exit and it should work fine. If you are using a Garmin power supply I would suggest contact them for a replacement. this will not work if Garmin Lock is enabled.

Plug in the charger and you will see the computer connection icon, then unplug the charger. Wait for the reboot screen and plug the charger back in. This will take the gps off of Mass storage mode until the next charger plug in.

Guys , the answere is in the fact that the usb connection has all its wires floating asif for a computer whereas the car charger cable earths the negative terminal to the silver outer ring of the plug that goes into the gps.
normal usb cables dont have the earth part as mentioned above. the only way to do this is to hack -it by soldering a tiny wire from the silver casing to the negative terminal not easy but possible

I have this same problem. I can just push down on the cable where it connects and it goes off pc mode. I believe the have a poor connector on these units.

Not helpful. We all have the same problem and it's WITH the stock charger. This unit is retarded. Really fed up with Garmin right now. Zero support.

I have a garmin gps nuvi 255w and I wanted to register it, but a massage keeps on poping up saying external power lost shuting in 29 seconds. What should I do?

Try to charge your nuvi properly and full, or for at least 2hours before registering it. If the source of power connected to your nuvi is not strong enough, the nuvi might go off during an operation. Secure that the battery is well charged, then the source supplying the power is good enough to supply your nuvi with power before starting an operation.
Hope this helps.

There are three ways to charge the internal battery in your automotive GPS unit.1
  1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle. About 3 hrs for a full charge. If the unit will not charge in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.
  2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
  3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer (like a full day) than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer.
1 - Please note that temperature can play an effect on the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C and below or 45°C and above (32°F and 113°F respectively) then it will not charge. When connected to external power it will only be operating off of external power.
2 - The Quest® and Quest® 2 will not charge using a USB cable.

Nothing Happens

This happens when the GPS unit is completely discharged. Try charging the GPS unit from an external source (USB from your PC or 5V USB power adopter). After a full charge, if the GPS unit powers on then something is wrong with the power cable or the 12V plug and you need to replace it.

Can not charge only works plugged in

Your Garmin nuvi 5000 will never charge because it has NO internal battery. The only time it will operate is when it is plugged into a 12 volt power source. I have one and it really doesn't bother me at all. I bought a second cradle and a 12 volt adapter for use in the home.

My garmin nuvi 200 worked fine the first 3 times

Connect your GPS to your computer with the USB cable and this will charge the GPS internal battery. Of course your computer will have to be on during the charging process. After a few hours turn on your GPS and see if it now works. If it now works then go to http://www.garmin.com and register the GPS. While you are on line also download the latest USB drivers for your computer and install them. When you reboot your GPS should be properly connected to the computer for Operating system downloads etc.

Is m Garmin nuvi 200 GPS charging

Merritt, Your Garmin Nuvi does not have a charging indicator similar to say your Cell ph. Simply a battery charge indicator scale. Normal full charge time is approximately 3 to 4 hr. If you looking to ensure your unit is in fact charging Plug in & then remove the connection, Your unit will pop-up a screen to request if you wish to remain on battery power. I hope this helps you.

How To Change The Battery On A Garmin Nuvi 760

Jan 21, 2009 | Garmin nuvi 200W GPS Receiver

1 Answer

First time use / battery charge

The Nuvi units are short on battery life and therefore Garmin has given you a connector other then USB to power your unit while in a car. You need to carry that. It's just a design flaw. If you try to rely on the battery of your Garmin Nuvi, you have less than 2 hours even on a full charge. And carrying the USB adapter which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket won't allow your unit to run while charging. so you need to take the adapter charger bracket that comes with the unit if you need it for longer trips.
