Question about Onkyo TX-SR502 Receiver

1 Answer

I have an Onkyo TX-SR803. Recently, I do not have sound for about 5 minutes. The sound is then available for hours. What causes this? How can it be fixed?

I'm assuming that you have checked the settings and the speakers are selected as outputs (not the headphones) and they are properly configured- someone might have pushed the wrong button on the remote and change the previous settings.
Most likely it's a bad contact in the power relays . To certify that you will have to open the unit and measure the voltages on them - in and out. If the relays are indeed at fault they will have to be replaced - this is a relatively complicated job that should be left to someone who has at least a basic experience in repairing electronics.

The reference if from where you have posted the question, not from me. If the headphone is activated but not plugged the system should automatically switch to the speakers almost immediately - 5 minutes is almost too much time for that, it indicates that something is wrong either with the settings (the automatic switching might have been disabled) or with the circuit that is supposed to do the sensing and switching = hardware malfunctioning. If it's the latter then the receiver will have to be tested, a job strictly for a well-qualified repairman.

TX-SR803 with no sound or popping hissing on any input

It is common for a short term power surge to open up the internal fuse in the main power transformer. Without testing some components inside the unit, I really can't say for sure whether or not the unit is worth repair. I would suggest that you invest in a detailed repair estimate at an authorized Onkyo service center.

Keep us posted.

Receiver switches to standby without notice

This receiver is likely to be overheating or has a shorted speaker wire. If the unit is very warm when it shuts down then it is in need of some additional ventilation. Onkyo's tend to run hot so this is critical for proper operation. A speaker wire problem could also cause an issue when the unit detecs a no load situation.

Trouble with the hooking up wiring for receiver, DVD/VCR combo and satellite to new DLP TV.

Jar50, lacking model numbers for your TV and Satellite, I would suggest connecting your DTV Satellite OPTICAL out to your 65"DLP. Connect your 65"DLP OPTICAL out to your Onkyo TX-DS484 OPTICAL in. If you are using the DIGITAL COAX, just substitute the instructions above from OPTICAL to COAX.
Hope this helps.
