Sharpening blades for qualcast 35s

With a cylinder mower the sharpness of the blade is only part of the concern. The fixed blade is like one of the blades of a pair of shears and each "blade" of the revolving cylinder acts as the other.

As long as only grass is being cut (no stones) the blades will last a long time with only occasional adjustment to the fixed blade as per instruction manual.
After much use or in case of damage the fixed blade will need replacing or sharpening. If it is badly worn it will need removing and sharpening by a specialist with the correct equipment but otherwise the light application of a file, stone or a patent sharpener and then readjust the blade per manual.

When eventually the cylinder becomes worn or sustains damage it must be removed and machine trued and sharpened using a lathe or similar.

An accurately sharpened cylinder and a true and sharp fixed blade correctly adjusted will consistently cut paper across the complete width of the blade when turned by hand. A competently sharped and adjusted cylinder mower will cut the thinnest tissue like the finest scissors without binding.

My ism 928 nailer wilnot return the blade so the nails woun`t feed.

Good morning Louis,

The reason that the driver blade isn't returning is that there is a leak or, pressure drop in the cylinder between the piston and the bump stop in the bottom of the unit. Basically, there's not enough "oomph" to take the piston right back to the top. Usually this is a simple job of taking the driver blade unit out, cleaning it and checking that either the O'Ring on the piston is in good shape and the bump stop that lives at the bottom of the cylinder is in good condition. If you look at the bump stop and it looks as though it's heavily pitted (Showing signs of failure) it'd be best to replace it. Then when you're ready to put it all back together, if required, lubricate the cylinder sleeve on the inside before relplacing the driver unit. Hopefully, this will sort out the issue. In total I'd expect this process to take about 15 minutes so, make a cup of tea and do it in a break.

Key broken off in cylinder

Hi,

The safest thing to do is to use a key extractor. These generally require an expert lock smith to use properly. Trying to use home made methods such as blades and super glue can cause more damage to the cylinder itself. It is recommended to go to a professional locksmith to avoid both cost and damage to your vehicle.

Removal & Installation

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

WARNING Vehicle must be in PARK prior to ignition cylinder removal.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disable the SIR (air bag) system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  3. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  4. Insert key into the ignition and rotate to the RUN position. Then rotate ignition cylinder back to ACC position.
  5. Depress the locking button through hole on side of ignition module assembly with a thin pick-type tool then slide the lock cylinder from the ignition housing.

Fig. Depress the locking button through hole on side of ignition module assembly

To install:

NOTE If you are installing a new lock cylinder, recoding will be required and a J 41340, Lock Cylinder Holding Fixture and Staking Tool will be required.

NOTE Ignition lock cylinder reads key cut position 1 through 9.
  1. Insert the appropriate tumbler (3) according to the key code into the corresponding tumbler ward.

Fig. Insert the appropriate tumbler according to the key code into the corresponding tumbler ward

  2. The tumblers will not immediately seat into position because the sidebar has been pre-assembled. The tumblers will have to be pushed past the sidebar with a small flat screwdriver or pocket knife.
  3. The tumbler springs (2) should then be inserted into the spring wells in the cylinder (4) where they will sit on top of the tumblers.
  4. The seal plate (1) will be installed and crimped.
  5. Insert the seal plate locator legs into the receptacle slots in the cylinder--seal plate will seat into position only when the two locator legs have been properly inserted into the receptacles on the cylinder.
  6. While holding the seal plate in position with the thumb, insert the key into the cylinder and watch for the side bar to drop. If the side bar does not drop, the lock is tumbled wrong and you need to start over.
  7. Ensure that the side bar does not drop on an angle. The side bar must be completely flush to the cylinder diameter.
  8. Stake (1) the two metal areas of the cylinder (2) directly over the seal plate legs with a hammer and punch or chisel.

  9. Repeat this stake on the areas of the cylinder directly opposite of the first to stakes.
NOTE Actuator blade within the ignition module must be in ACC position to install the lock cylinder assembly. If rotated, reposition the actuator blade to the ACC position using needle nose pliers.
  10. Insert key into ignition lock cylinder and install the cylinder into the lock housing.
  11. Rotate the lock cylinder in the housing. Verify proper rotation.
  12. Install the steering column trim covers.
  13. Enable the SIR system.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.

How do i sharpen cylinder mower blades

I believe you mean to say a 'reel' mower. Normally and old fashoined push (non-engine powered) mower.

Most consumer reel mowers do not need to be sharpened. They do however have a knife bed that occasionally needs to be adjusted. It should have the thickness of a regular piece of notebook paper between the blades and the knife bed. (that is really VERY close) You can buy 'lapping compound' from an automotive parts store, and apply that to the bed knife, and then rotate the blades to provide a precise fit for all blades.

Commercial reel mowers, such as those used on golf course equipment are however sharpened normally once or twice a year. It requireds dismantling, and many courses send their blades to a central location for golf equipment, where they are placed on a computer operated sharpener for precision grinding. This cost several hundreds of dollars just for the grinding.

How do you rplace an ignition lock cylinder on a 98 toyota corolla

You can do this one yourself if you want it does not require removing the steering wheel. just the plastic housing from the steering column.
remove housing/cover. then look at housing with cylinder lock assem. on bottom about 1.2 inches or so from the end of the lock assembly you will see a very small hole insert metal pin into hole and push in while turning the key in the ignition backwards to accessory positionyou will feel the pin your pushing move in a bit, then you should be able to pull the cylinder assembly out. insert new assembly with key in the same position and turn forward this will install your new assemlby then reassemble your plastic column covers.

Check the small pin holes in the cylinder. If they become clogged the blade will not fully retract. Also check/change the O rings on the cylinder and flange.

Any sewing machine store should have or be able to obtain these blades for you. You should only need one because one of them is a carbide steel blade(Very Hard). It will have a dark color on the cutting part of the blade.Replace the other one.
