Question about Dewalt DC920KA Heavy Duty Xrp 18V Cordless Drill/Driver

1 Answer

Drill completely stopped working. Bad smell from battery. Charged up the second battery and plugged it in. In three seconds, it started smoking very badly. I removed it. The drill worked with second battery. There seems to be a short. It started all by itself. I walked away from the first battery and when I came back it had burnt out completely. So is the drill shot from shorting? Is there a fix.

Hi,
The only way to tell if you can fix it is to take the drill apart...
Look for two wires melted together...my guess is that they got too hot and melted together inside the drill... separate and insulate and you should be fine...

I am thinking the switch or motor is bad, check the switch first. you can locate parts at dewaltservicenet.com. Make a wiring diagram before removing anything, these parts are polarity sensitive.

Brand new hitachi 18v, one battery charged fine the second is completely dead it was in the drill from the factory and the charger won't recognize it when attached.

I have just had a similar issue I left the drill unused for a period and when i placed it in the charger the charger showed the battery as charged after about 15 secondseconds.

Following a internet search i found a site that suggested for a imlar problem with a camera jump starting the low battery with a 9 v battery. I had a spare from the drill which was fully charged so placed a contact from + to + and - to - and held for about 2 mins. I then placed the battery back in the charger and it started charging. Running the battery down as we speak to recharge again well worth a try. If you dont have a spare maybe the 9 v would work

check continuity across two pins on drill that get power from battery. If they are 'touching' or have continuity the drill is bad. It sounds like that is the case as two batteries did the same thing. Can you try the batteries in any other 18v dewalt tool? Borrow a friends if you don't have any other tools but see if batteries do the same.
Also, measure power of battery before you put it in and see how much the afterward you had it in for a second how much power it has. If it is shorted in the drill it will drain power. Sounds like a short inside drill. GL

Hitachi DS18DFL, just stops after seconds of use???

time to replace the battery. eventually they won't keep a full charge anymore. they have a memory. if it's 100% charged, and you use 90% or the charge then charge it, it'll only let you run 90% of it next time. you lose 10% of the charge capacity.

You have burned out the drill motor, it is shorted, the battery smoked due to a direct short, one thing I don't understand why the thermal limiter didn't trip in battery pack, I would contact manufacturer and try to get hem to buy you a new drill.
