Question about Sony DVP-FX730 Portable DVD Player

1 Answer

Hi there, I let my daughter use my DVP-FX730 and next thing I know it's not reading discs. Actually says "Cannot read this disc." It's out of warranty and I hate to throw it out - however it's likely going to cost me more than it's worth. Thoughts?

Unfortunately the problem is in the laser pickup assembly, the only option is take rubbing alcohol and a q-tip and carefully wipe the lens and allow several minutes to dry, if you are lucky the unit will function, if not! much cheaper to replace the dvd player.

My dvd will not play any disc it's the sony dvp-ns725p model

Hi,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust and any fine foreign objects the lens can't read any disc. If you have a CD Lens cleaner, play it to the affected area. If this is not available you may manually clean the optical lens. Open the cover and gently clean the eye of the lens by smooth, clean, soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this, just a gentle stroke only.
2.Check the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : Most of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Also, check if your unit is under warranty period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Don't attempt to open the cover(it will void the warranty).

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

My Sony DVP-CX777ES player just opens and closes several times upon powering up. Then it stops and I get an error message that reads "C 32 00." Then it turns off.

Hi,
Please check door mechanism as explained in chat session and possibly loading belt and/or door switches could be culprit and causing problem.
Hope this will help.
Thanks.

Hi, I have a sony portable dvd player (DVP-FX730). Is there any way I can make this region free? (currently region 2)

Hi,
I'm afraid, there is no way to change region code in Sony dvd players including DVP-FX730
I'm sorry for that.
Thanks.

Says cannot play the disc or no disc

Hi Kenny, Here are some steps that may help. You should prepare tools and multimeter. Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc. Try clean the lens by soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.
You may visit this link for more info http://www.fixya.com/support/r7833671-change_defective_motor_portable_dvd.
Hint : 50% of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
Ifyou already cleaned the lens, and confirmed that the ribbon is good as well as the motor then I've advice you to send it to repair shop because the next step should be done with an expert because it is quite technical diagnosing the fault between the pick-up lens and the main board.
Hope it may help you.
Have a nice day!
