Freezer is cold and fridge is not. If I nock on the vent in the fridge it sounds like something is opening and it starts to cool.

All the big cooling happens inside freezer compartment. Freezer gives little cool air to fridge compartment. Now when the vent blocks that little cold air cannot go into fridge compartment. Thus your freezer works good but not fridge compartment. Milk goes bad but frozen meet keeps good.....

Vent freeze up either due to defrost problemt, defrost drain line problem, Evaporator fan problem or even can be your damper motor not opening due to unit failure or frozen damper door.

The freezer is where the heat is removed from the box and cold air should circulate from the freezer into the refrigerator section. Something must be blocking the vent between the two. There is only one cooling unit; it cools the freezer and is also vented into the fridge for sub-freezing temperatures.

Its defrost problem.When the freezer section gets cold and reaches its required cooling temperature, after that the frost on freezer section starts defrosting and the cooling fan in the freezer section blows this cool air from freezer to fridge. But if the defrost cycle does not start then over ice will get collected on freezer ventilations and that will block the air passing section from freezer to fridge, so the freezer gets cool but fridge section does not cool.Try manual defrost by unplugging the refrigerator from main power outlet for 24 hours then reconnect it and check, if the same problem is noticed again,. If yes then its defrost board problem. The defrost board located in the back of fridge section. Check to see if the cold air supply from the freezer to the fridge section is blocked and that the fan is running. The fridge uses cold air from the freezer to cool and many times the intake is blocked by something in the freezer compartment.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge.The fan in the freezer blows air through it. The ice may have also stopped up this opening blocking the air flow.Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

You have two vents between the freezer and fridge. The one the cold air from the freezer comes through(blown by the fan) and the other vent is a return vent back to the freezer. On a side/side they're at the top and bottom. It sounds like the bottom one may be blocked by food or frosted closed by ice.

In most refrigerator freezers, the refrigerator gets its cold from the freezer. The evaporator fan circulates air over the coils in the freezer and cold air circulates into the refrigerator through vents. If the vents are blocked or closed, then the fridge will not get cold enough but the freezer will. If neither is cold enough, then the number of possibilities increases.
Lowering the freezer temperature will increase the cooling cycle activity. Setting the refrigerator temperature may have little affect on the cooling cycles because it simply changes the vent opening size. Decreasing the fridge temperature opens the vents more and increases air circulation from the freezer.
The temperature can be adjusted using the controls found inside the refrigerator or freezer. The ideal freezer temperature is about 0 to 5 degrees (F) and about 38 degrees (F) for the fridge.
Measure the temperature by placing a cup of water with a cooking thermometer into the refrigerator for about 2 hours or more. To test the freezer, substitute alcohol or cooking oil.

There is a damper motor that is behind the vent where you feel the cold air coming out in the fridge section.  That damper should open and close after making temp. adjustments.  See if you can look in the vent and see if it is wide open.  Set your freezer on the coldest setting and check this vent again an hour or so later.  If it is still wide open then that damper motor is bad.  Let me know if you find something different or have any questions.
