Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

The 5 year oven heater does not work although it did last night The fuse box is fine, the control board shows all functions as working. When pushing bake, the 350F shows, and the soon after it shows 100 F and also On You hear clicks, but no heat on top nor bottom. Could it be that the sensor is not working?

Thank you for your assistance with this. I had real difficult time getting the oven out since the people installing it had actually build the cupboard around it. So I had to do some carpentry work!! Go figure.
I looked for the high temperature cut off fuse thinking it was an easy access on the top of the oven. As you would be aware it was located on the top, but under the protective sheet metal plate. So a little more work. It had been triggered and after resetting it the oven works fine.
We wonder what actually triggered it, may be a surge during a thunderstorm, who knows.
Anyway, thank you for your assistance and help with getting this problem solved and certainly better than being forced to purchase a new oven!!

Hello, Welcome to FixYa.

Based on your post I understand you have a problem with a oven not working, however if you could provide the complete make (brand name) and model number and possibly the age of the unit I would be better equipped to assist you without generalizing on what it may or may not be.

There are several components which could cause the scenario's you speak of including a hi-limit safety thermostat...but that's where the make and model come in. I'll watch and look forward for your reply and help you move forward from there.

Thank you for visiting FixYa for your inquiry.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

There is indeed a fuse/hi-limit located at the top, and the scenario you described is associated often with this...but you will need to remove the top panel to access it and change it out.

Unfortunately this requires removing the unit since it is built into the cabinet...unless there is access through the back of the cabinet built in as some folks have done foreseeing service issues when installed.

**Make sure the breaker (main power-40amp circuit) is turned off before performing any repairs or attempting service...safety first**

This image indicates what you're looking for. Part # 318004900, High temperature cut-out (fuse)

    *Push red button to re-set

It is available at "repairclinic.com" as the image would indicate or "searspartsdirect.com" to name another.

If this is something you think is not within' your scope of expertise please call a pro. I will try to help in any manner I can going forward of course as well. Good luck.

Thank you for choosing FixYa today. (sorry for the delay earlier) Please take a moment to rate the info I provided here for you and a brief testimony is appreciated.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

Microwave stopped working. No power

please follow this steps and fix it. God bless you

Line Fuse

Every microwave oven has a line fuse. This fuse is designed to blow if too much current is drawn through the microwave circuitry. The fuse can be replaced, but the underlying issue should still be investigated and resolved. Otherwise the new fuse will blow also.
Main Control Board

If the microwave is not working the main control board may be defective. This is not common. When a microwave stops working the problem is usually the line fuse or within the high voltage circuit; either the high voltage capacitor, diode, transformer or magnetron.

Thermal Fuse

If the microwave is not working the thermal fuse may have blown. It can be tested for continuity. Watch our fuse testing video for more information.
Thermoprotector

If the microwave is not working the thermoprotector may have tripped. This is a safety device to prevent the microwave from overheating. It can be tested for continuity to see if it's blown.1_24_2013_4_57_51_pm.gif

I replaced both of the oven top/night lights when one of them burned out. Now the lights will not turn off. All other functions work...even the push button switch. What's up with that?

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.

You most likely had a power surge and blew a fuse. First unplug the unit, then remove the top grill. There will either be one screw on top of the control pad or 2 on the left side. open the control panel and look for a fuse that has a ceramic center and replace it with a 20 amp one. You can find these at the hardware store

It is the control panel. You can actually just replace the circuit board on the control panel and it should fix this.

Kenmore Microwave Hood Combination: over the stove Model #721.80602500

Disclaimer: I'm a DIYer, not a technician.

Our GE over-the-range microwave stopped producing heat yesterday while warming part of the T-giving feast. Everything else (fan, control panel, light) works fine.

After disassembly and testing last night, I discovered a defective "secondary door switch." Your Kenmore uses a similar switch (~$19 on-line), and that might be the problem. But it also could be other things, such as a bad thermal cut-out.

If you know anyone who's handy with a multimeter, most of the basic diagnostics seem to be pretty straightforward.

Microwave runs fine - heats nothing

The most common causes for a lack of heating are a bad door switch, a loose connection on the magnetron, a bad magnetron, bad connection on the control circuit board, a bad relay on the board, bad high voltage diode, or bad high voltage transformer. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk We are the ones who repair the displays and control boards, by the way.
