Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Open Question

Model 917.276825 Craftsman w/automatic transmission, when I pull out the rod in the back it will not go into neutral anymore and of course can't be pushed by hand. Other than that it runs and mows fine. Any ideas?

917.276825 Craftsman I gave up and figured this out on my own. I took the battery and the battery holder so I could get to the actual part that goes into the tranny and puts it in neutral when I pull the rod out in the back. It was "frozen" so I took a hammer and a big screwdriver and gently hammered until the lever started to move. I then removed the lever and put some WD40 down when the lever goes, then I put the part back on and worked it back and forth 12-15 times. hooked the rod back up and it stated to work like it was made to do. I can get it in neutral again.

SOURCE: mower stopped moving

If this is a manual transmission, check the drive belt from the engine back to the transmission. With the clutch pedal up (engaged) there should be no slack in the belt.

If it is a hydrostatic drive, check the drive belt and make sure it is tight. Check the transmission fluid level and make sure it is full. Refer to your owners manual as it will describe the fluid check proceedure.
Good luck, let me know.

I have a craftsman rider LT2-2000 I can't find a pin or lever to pull to push in reverse when not running anyone know where to find it

all the riding mowers free wheel rods are on the back of the mower below the fender with a locking mechanism, zero turns are either under the seat where the hydraulic pumps are or under the mower but above the deck there's 2 rods on every zero turn. not all the riding mowers have the roll rod some just have neutral and the machine rolls, check your brakes under the back transmission just jiggle the brake and it should unloosen and free roll I hope at least some of this information helps you if not now then in the future

Craftsman 917273482 will not shift into gear, and I can't push it because it won't disengage

If there is too much play in the drive belt due to belt stretch or linkage wear, the belt will be too loose to drive the tranny but still cause the tranny input shaft to rotate preventing it from being put into gear.
Do the gears grind when trying to put into gear? With engine off you should still be able to push the machine if you put it in neutral. Unless, of course it is a hydrostatic transmission, in which case there should be a lever to push/pull which will put the hydrostat in neutral. This is all assuming that it is a hydro and while running the machine won't move when putting the drive lever into forward or reverse.

check the belt tension then check . then check the rod on the rear of the mower to see if the rod you pull when you want to push it is not released

My Craftsman riding lawnmower will not crank. I chgd the battery, but the engine will not attempt to crank. It also appears to be in gear even though it's in neutral

First you have to solve the "in gear" problem. No mower will crank if the drive is engaged. You have to see what is keeping it in gear and once you solve that, it will crank. I have an automatic, so I don't know how yours operates. There may be a cable or rod that moves the transmission into neutral. Look at how your clutch or brake pedal operates to determine what is not happening.
Write back.

Is the back up switch connected to the shifting linkage of the automatic transmission on my 1988 ford bronco II

If you have the C5 trans, here is the info:

C5 Transmission
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Remove the downshift linkage rod from the transmission downshift lever.
  4. Apply rust penetrant to the outer lever attaching nut to prevent breaking the inner lever shaft. Remove the transmission downshift outer lever attaching nut and lever.
  5. Remove the two neutral start switch retaining bolts.
  6. Disconnect the multiple wire connector.
  7. Remove the neutral start switch from the transmission.

To install:

  1. Install the neutral start switch on the transmission. Install the two retaining bolts.
  2. Adjust the neutral safety switch following the above procedure.
  3. Install the outer downshift lever and retaining nut, and tighten the nut. Install the downshift linkage rod with the retaining clips.
  4. Connect the wire multiple connector. Check the operation of the switch. The engine should start only with the transmission selector lever in N or P.

If it is the:
C3 And A4ld Transmissions
It's on the transmission....

// // 0) preLoad.src = ctl00_cphLeft_chRepairTreeNav_tvTOC_ImageArray[i]; } ctl00_cphLeft_chRepairTreeNav_tvTOC_Data.lastIndex = 35; ctl00_cphLeft_chRepairTreeNav_tvTOC_Data.populateLog = theForm.elements['ctl00_cphLeft_chRepairTreeNav_tvTOC_PopulateLog']; ctl00_cphLeft_chRepairTreeNav_tvTOC_Data.treeViewID = 'ctl00$cphLeft$chRepairTreeNav$tvTOC'; = 'ctl00_cphLeft_chRepairTreeNav_tvTOC_Data'; //]]> c17hydro_179.gif

When i put mower in reverse it moves very slow an when in neutral mower still moves forward have to pull lever back beyond neutral position to find neutral is there an adjustment on transmission

there is a adjustment under the r/h rear gaurd just under where the lever goes to hydro unit you should see a slot and a adjustment bolt arrangement

make sure you put the tractor in true nuetral 1st then undo the bolt that clamps lever to shift arm / shaft ( this connects to plate that operates swash plate on the pump ) and move the lever either fwd or back until (without moving transmission from true nuetral ) it fits into the nuetral slot correctly and tighten the adjustment bolt - test and adjust as nescesary

here is website for parts
get model and type numbers off machine ie 917-??????

Reverse workes sometimes

Is it a manual or automatic transmission?

On the automatics the two cables that interconnect above the transmission need to be set perfect for the transmission to pump pressure and engage the transmission.

Set it so the backside is fairly tight and the carburator isn't loose to the throttle valve assembly. Then loosen the front cable and pull it towards yourself until tight and finger tighten the adjustment bolts.

Now shift it into Neutral. Loosen the front and back nuts on the heavy shifting rod and center them again. Tighten them up. If you loose reverse loosen the front cable a tiny bit and you're done.

I am trying to get my 18.5hp 42" cut craftsman DLT3000 to move. The rod in the back is in, and the wheels are still locked up on the transmission. What would cause the transmission to lock up?

At the end of the rod under the battery there is a lever that bolts to the transmission you will need to spray with wd40 and tap it with a hammer back and forth until it starts to move then continue to oil it and move it back & forth with your hand , its stuck in the gear position. if you are looking to get it in the neutral position follow the above procedure these catch alot of dirt and seize up.
