Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Based on the info you provided in your post, it quite likely is the drive coupling that has broken...it is very common, that would indeed explain the noise appearing to be from the motor.

**Unplug the washer from it's source/the wall before performing any service to the unit...safety first**

To inspect the drive coupling to confirm it is broken or not, you can lean the washer back (careful of the hoses) to allow you to visually inspect it or remove the cabinet completely...it is fairly straight forward and can be done even by a novice "handyman/person"

Part number is 285753A and will look like this image....

I've attached a link here that will provide the part availability and clear instructions to replace the coupling but also help describe the removal of the cabinet or to just inspect everything thoroughly. Once there scroll to the bottom of the page.

Let me know how you make out or if you require further assistance and I'll be glad to help in any manner I can. Good luck.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

Whirlpool top loader washer will not spin

Could be one of several different things depending on the age and model. If its less than 10 years old and is a top load washer its probably a motor coupling (connects the motor to the transmission kinda like a belt) or lid switch. If the water is draining out but the washer is not spinning its probably the motor coupling. If it still has water in it and won't spin, its probably the lid switch. If your washer is a front loader there could be several things going on. Hope that helps.

Need to replace coupling between tub and motor? How does tub come off?

If you are referring to the motor coupling, it is actually located between the drive motor and teh gearcase. You DO NOT have to remove the wash tub in order to access and replace it. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace a motor coupling on a Whirlpool top loader:

If you have questions about this repair, or if the model washer you have differs from the one you listed this question under, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Whirlpool Ultimate Care Heavy Duty Washer will not spin

It sounds like you have a broken motor coupling. This is a very inexpensive and simple repair.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top
The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

Your motor coupling is probably broken. Tip washer back and look for rubber shavings or any broken plastic.Motor coupling goes from motor to transmission This is common with these models/t.Visually check coupler.

My Estate Whirlpool Washer, model #TAWS850PQ0 fills the tub but does nothing else. It does not agitate or spin, just hums.

if it cuts off the water ok and motor running
it could be a coupling .
possible transmission.
if no motor noise
could be motor .
wiring,
timer.

I believe this is a similar model to mine, which did the same things. This is a direct drive style (no belt). What possible happened is the coupling in between the motor and transmission has broken partially, and it "grabbing" only under a light load. It's a relatively inexpensive (under $5) part, and can be changed pretty easily.

These couplings can be found on Ebay:

If this link doesn't post correctly, just search for "whirlpool coupling". Good luck.

Washer does not spin or agitate

you need to remove the cabinet to expose the washer. once you do that you need to remove the 2 clips that hold the pump to the motor. then remove the 2 1/4 inch screws that hold the 2 clips onto the motor. ( remove the wireing connector first) remove the motor and Im sure you will find that the coupling need to be replaced. There are 3 parts to the coupling. 1 rubber and 2 white plastic parts. replace the coupling and install everything in reverst. your washer should work fine after this.
