Simple answer is yes, by shorting out the tilt switch it will let you know if the tilt switch is working. Before getting a new thermcouple check the thread size, the main ones out of China are 8mm but some are 10mm. On average a thermocouple will last between 2 years up to 6 years.

How much does the hss-a-ss stainless steel patio heater cost?

There are many generic patio heaters that use standard model codes, it can be very difficult to find who the supplier is. HSS or SS is a standard Chinese factory code, to find a price and supplier take a look locally or via the web and ask for Chinese patio heaters. Worth asking if they have a stainless steel burner, many just fit a chrome or tin plated burner, for more information found this very useful specialist patio heaters.

Our patio heater only stays alight on level one. if we move it to heat level 2 or 3 the same as level one

If the patio heater has push button settings the problem may be due to worn seals in the valve, if it has a rotor valve then try clearing out the mantle. Water sitting in the mantle will cause low flames, tipping it (switch off first) will tell if you have water in the pipes. If all else fails found this site very useful patio heater problem solving.

Pilot light lights but goes out when I let up on it.

This can be caused by a worn thermocouple, these are consumable itmes that can last 1 to 5 years and will need to be changed. Sometimes it can also be a faulty tilt switch and worth shorting out the tilt switch first. Just place a wire between the leads on the small black box to short it and try lighting. My patio heater snapped off, in half, where the pole meets the base. It was on a deck that has walls so it isn't like there was even a lot of wind hitting it. Anyone know if I can get this covered? I have...

The Warranty information is on page 12 for the HSS-A-SS model. I had the exact same thing happen to my patio heater and am interested in any response from people that have had success getting this problem fixed in a fair manor.
The failure on my patio heater was at the weld of the lower pole to the base flange. I'm an engineer and know that that weld should not fail without a huge stress and lots of obvious bending around the weld prior to failure. Mine had no signs of bending around the failure so I believe this is a faulty or very low quality weld issue from the manufacture. I called the number in the manual and was basically told that they do not warranty tip overs but I could take it back to Home Depot and see if they would replace it. I never mentioned that my heater had tipped over! Garden Sun is obviously not in the business of protecting its name and will put words in your mouth to try and get out of something that is obviously a product quality issue. They appear to be exercising loop holes in the Garden Sun warranty. I'm sure there are other loop holes as well because the representative asked me if I had pets (what does that have to do with the strength of their product).
Please pas along if and how you were able to resolve this issue and I'll update if I'm successful at Home Depot.

The pilot light and the unit will not stay lit

If the unit works, with a mind of it's own, and shuts off or won'r light at random, it is usually the tip-over sensor, it is a black plastic switch, with 2 wires running to it, usually under the metal screen, it has a metal ball in it that makes contact with the 2 wires, as long as the heater is standing up, but if the heater were to tip over it shuts it off. For testing purposes, if you connect the 2 wires together and try to light the heater, it will usually work perfect. You will then need to contact the manufacture to get a replacement part, it is not safe to run it, with this control bypassed, just incase the heater tips over.
If this has been helpful, please rate the new guy :)

I purchased GardenSun Patio Heater Model: HSS-A-SH and no screws or bolts came with it. How do I get or replace them? Thanks

Go back to where you got it and tell them. They should provide the needed pieces, free. If you have to buy them, they still should know what to give you. Good luck...Lee

Patio Heater pilot lights won't stay lit

crappy pilot flame (not properly heating the thermocouple), bad thermocouple, thermocouple loose where it screws into the pilot safety valve, bad safety valve magnet.

One or more of those is the problem.

Oh...there is also a saftey case it tips over. It will also cause the pilot to not stay lit (if the switch or wires that go to i are faulty)
