Overheating is usually caused by insufficient air flow inside the laptop. Make sure all vents are clear. Check that the fan is working. You should ba able to hear it spinning and it will speed up when the laptop is used for more instensive work such as playing video files or games. If you can't hear the fan or it is running slow, then you will need to remove the keyboard and check the fan. It may just require cleaning, or it may need to be replaced.
As far as operating system go, it should be able to run Windows Vista or Windows 7.

This does not have to do with the operating system. If you are interested in the operating system, it can work well with windows vista or windows 7 depending on the specifications on the system.
To your problem in full, there are quite a number of events that can cause the system to overheat frequently.
First of all, it is recommended that you use your system in an area that is well ventilated. Apart from being well ventilated, you have to ensure that the vents are on an open end and there is free passage of cool air in and out of the system. This prevents the system from overheating.
Also, you must clean these vents carefully and diligently because the slightest error can cause a serious damage to your system and also lead to overheating.
Lastly, you have to ensure that the fans are working properly. You can do this by trying to listen carefully to observe if there is a sound like that of a winding motor inside the system.
Hope this solution was helpful? Please comment for more information and thank you for using FixYa.

Mr Meer, let me start at the end, on the second question. Operating systems are a matter of personal preference, and rarely interfere with the normal operation of hardware, in other words, software will not induce hardware failure except in a few easy to identify cases.

Overheating can be caused either by cooling fan (s) failure, or by excessive CPU computing, or "looping". Any of these situations will bring the dreaded "blue screen" and hang / stop your laptop.

To eliminate the possibility of excessive computations that cause the CPU to overheat, open the task manager, and look at CPU activity. The inactive process line should read more than 96%, except when doing something complex, then it drops down, but settles above 96% after a few seconds. If it reads between 10% and 60% constantly, that is the origin of the problem.

The other possibility is a fan failure. Borrow an auxiliary fan base/ pedestal and see if the problem is cured. If this is the case, either the board fan or the cpu fan have stopped working. On most laptops cpu fan is almost impossible to hear.

How to fix unexpected shutdown due to Blue screen problem of Pavilion HDX9494NR

See if the Check disk utility will solve your problem. To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

If the Computer restarts randomly, then the issue might be due to any damaged Operating System Files.
But, if the Computer shuts down randomly, it is due to the Processor.
All the Processors will be designed in such a way that, if there is any overheating issues, the Computer will shut down randomly.
The overheating might occur due to the malfunction of the Cooling Fan in the Computer.
As this is a overheating issue, it would be better to get the Unit examined at the Service Center.
Replacing the Cooling Fan in the Computer should resolve the issue.

Laptop shuts down is there a progame to keep an eye on the temp of the laptop

The main reason for laptop sudden shutdown is because your laptop is overheating, the fan must be clogged with dust bunnies, you should blow in your fan vent, and maybe open it up through the bottom and clean your fan out, because thats the main cause of that..but here is a program you can use to check your fan temperature http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

My hp pavilion zx5000 overheats and shuts down unexpectedly, i am sure of this because i downloaded speedfan and the temp is at least 216 f. i am going to put heat conductivity grease on it.

Try to open the cover of the laptop and clean the vents in the heat sink area and the cpu area. It is very likely those vents have been filled up with dust and down. Remove and clean the heat sink that covers the cpu, also.

Hp pavilion dv4-1220us overheating then shutsdown

Sounds like you need to take it in for repairs, clean outs and/or replacements.

This product is known for it's heating issue and power consumption. Maybe the fan is starting to wear out and it's affecting the rest of the system. I would suggest checking the warranty on the system, if it is no longer valid, then I would look for a local tech in the newspaper.

My hp computer restarts unexpectedly

Does it occur when switching to or from a specific user? If so the profile is bad.

If it happens on all users try running a repair on the operating system.

HP Pavilion zd8000 unexpected Shutdowns

Hi, There might be 3 possibilities why your laptop is shutting down: 1. You have a shortcut key in your keyboard that is pressed (accidentally or reacting to other keystrokes) that is configured to shut down your laptop; 2. You have a virus that is programmed to shutdown your laptop after a pre-determined amount of time; and/or 3. Your battery and/or AC adapter is no longer capable of supplying the power needs of your laptop. A few things you can do: a. Verify/Check if you have enabled any key stroke shortcuts for a quick shutdown; b. Check your Control Panel, Power Options, Advance tab, for any autoshutdown features, disable; c. use a known good/updated anti virus program and scan your drives. It might also be a good idea to run a program similar to Ad-Aware to scan for malicious ads; d. Charge your battery overnight and see if the problem persists. Or run the laptop with the AC adapter always plugged in to the mains and to your HP Pavilion ZD8000. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
