Try running scandisk to check the drive for errors. If a directory or file has a name containing invalid characters then you cannot access it. This can happen if the file allocation table gets corrupted. Unfortunately there is no easy fix if you need to access any files in the folder. You may need to find some data recovery software if the data is important.

Rename toshiba external hard drive

Check to see if there is a file in the root directory called "autorun.inf". If there is, either delete it, or move it to a backup folder. Now you should be able to rename your portable hard drive.

If you don't see the new name take effect right away, Safely remove the drive, unplug it and plug it back in. The changes should show up immediately.

Weird folder/filenames that will not delete There is a folder on my WD 250 GB Passport Flash drive who's properties show it to be using 157 GB of memory. The Read Only attribute was set, unchecked it. I...

Problem: Folders / files in USB flash drive got named with weird strange characters & those folder / files cannot be copied or deleted.

Reason: Virus infected

Solution:
1. Click on "Computer"
2. Right click on the drive that contains USB flash drive
3. Select "properties"
4. Click on "Tools"
5. Click on "Check Now"
6. Check disc options will appear on screen, put a tick mark in the box in front of Automatically fix file system errors
7. Tick mark in the box in front of Scan for & attempt recovery of bad sectors is not necessary.
8. Click on "Start"
9. Upon finishing of this task, screen will show message "Your device disc was successfully scanned" and bla bla. Close it.
10. After this process the undeletable folder in USB flash drive can be deleted by selecting it & deleting it. The contents of affected folders files cannot be recovered.

After lot of struggle I got this solution on my own by the grace of God.
Sure it will work for others too.

Thanks and regards Raju

Wd my book hard drive wont transfer some files

I suggest you take a note from the message of which file/files is/are causing the problems and rename them. The whole file path counts toward the length, so if a number of files are under a folder with a long name, they might all be triggering the problem, and renaming the folder with the long name, to a shorter name, could solve many of the individual file problems. Aim for a full path name length of less than 256 characters.

And for files with symbols it can't read, have a careful look at all the characters in the full path name, and re-name any files using unusual characters. Stick to using alphabetic and numeric characters. If you know some files with special characters that you have successfully copied, then those characters would be OK too. I think comma, space, plus sign, minus sign, underscore, parentheses are OK, and there are some others.

Some applications will let you save files with long file names in their working folder, without checking the full path name, then when the operating system comes along and bulk-copies things, it's dealing with the full path name and stalls.

Another possibility I haven't tried, is to go into a folder with long file names, and compress everything into a zip file (give it a short name), then when the bulk-move utility moves it all, it doesn't have to deal directly with the long file names. You can unpack it at the other end. As I said, I haven't tried it, but it might work well for you if you don't want to rename the individual files.

Good luck on the big move.

Western digital my passport 320 file path too deep

The "path" is the full name of a file or a folder, e.g.,

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

If the path has too many characters, you get the error-message that you reported.

If you can, rename one of the folders, using a shorter name.

Hi i need your help with micro SD

Hi,

Firstly, you need to install FExplorer, a free file manager that allows us to browser through S60 file system.

Next, launch FExplorer and then browser to c:\system folder. There is a file, called mmcstore.

Rename the file to mmcstore.txt and then open it. Your password must be several characters at the end of the file.

Good Luck.
