-- You need to go to the Registry Editor.

-- If you have XP: Press Start then go to RUN. Type REGEDIT and press ENTER.

-- If you have Windows Vista or Win7: Press Start then type REGEDIT (it should show on the start search box) then press ENTER or left-click on the item that shows on the top left of the menu as regedit

When you have the panel up you need to make sure you follow these instructions precisely.

Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders to get them expanded

* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

Once you have made sure you are on the correct folder you need to look for the "upper filter" and "lower filter" and DELETE them. It needs to be specically as it is. Do not delete it if if it says .bak at the end of the name.

After this you MUST make sure the values are exactly like this:

(Default): DVD/CD-ROM drives
Class: CDROM

ClassDesc: @%SystemRoot%\System32\StorProp.dll,-17001

EnumPropPage32: storprop.dll,DvdPropPageProvider

IconPath: %SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll,-30

Installer32: storprop.dll,DvdClassInstaller

-- If any of them does not match you need to double click on the item name and change the value accordingly.

Close the page and RESTART the computer.

A registry problem was detected. This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there is a failure opening the service registry entry, or if the driver name cannot be obtained from the service registry entry.

Try these options:

  • In the Control Panel
  • Click on the CD/DVD entry in the device manager, right click, select Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver.
  • Or:
    If the device is a CD or DVD drive, follow the procedure in Article ID 929461

  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration. This rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration.

Click on this link or copy and paste the complete link into your browser.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Since it has something to do with the registry, you have 2 options to fix it. There are lots of forums that shows steps on how to edit the registry (make sure to back up registry files before editing it, mistakes on registry editing can cause further damage to the operating system). However, I do not suggest this to non-advanced users. If you are not comfortable with editing the registry, I recommend to just reinstall the operating system.

Hope this helps.

Optiarc cd-rw crx880a ata device: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Did you try to click "Troubleshoot" on the page that reported "cannot start" ?

Did you try to click on the device, and choose "uninstall" ?
Then, rebooting Windows should cause Windows to "find new hardware", and properly configure the DVD/CD drive.
