Re: Mic not working and audio coming from both headphone...
Before you go changing drivers and re-installing.
Are you useing the Headphone set supplied by HP on the Laptop ?
The Male jack may fit your input connection but be the wrong connection configuration.
Just an idea. Try a regular mic and make sure it works before making all kinds of changes.
If the headphone set was supplied by HP with your unit, then you may want to bring it buy Radio Shack and ask them to check it for you.
A short in the input wiring will mess things up.
Hope this helps.

check your audio settings and make sure your mic level is up and get her to check her speakers are on and plugged in or her headphones are on. Also get "her" to make sure her mic is plugged in (the right socket...red one if PC) and that the mic volume is up on the internal mixer and "un-muted". This is a universal answer for an ambiguous question. For more in depth solution, please give your system details and platform plus what ever headset/mic you are using.
Try a different set of headphone, if it works, then it is the headphone set.
If you get same problem with all headphones, then
If you get no sound: ensure that you have sound from speaker, if you get sound from speakers and no headphone working, then there is a problem in the headphone connection.
If you have no sound at all , not even with speakers, then check audio settings in control panel, ensure audio is not muted. If audio settings are OK, then you need to reinstall audio driver, or you have a faulty audio card.
Additionally, if it is only the mic not working then do the following:
Go to control panel and open sound and audio device.
Open volume settings and find settings for mic.
Tick off the mute option.
The mic is muted by default in Windows, that is usually the reason why it is not working.
seems silly but i believe you have them connected into wrong plug on sound card take a close look at the three or more plugholes at back of computer Usually microphone is green the other are colored different if not colored they will have diagrams on them please give it a try and post comment helpful etc
My laptop model is compaq presario c754tu, I have installed Windows Vista Business, and the audio is working fine, but the internal mic and external microphone both work together........i want to mute the internal mic..... how i can do it ? please reply me on my email id i.e. email@example.com
Its due to your internal laptop MIC's failure! Plz check at any Compaq Service station! Becoz its internal hardware error! Becoz there r no seperate drivers for MIC! If your speakers are working great then MIC should work or else try to get repaired it!
