Question about Televison & Video

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-52S4100 52" HDTV LCD TV. It is not in warranty so I'm trying to fix it myself. The bottom 5th of the screen starts out dark and after about 20min. the lower 5th of the screen has horizontal squiggly lines. I need to know what is wrong and how to fix it myself. Thanks Peg

I don't feel as though my problem is the same as the tv in the photo. I only have horizontal lines on the bottom 5th of the screen and the rest of the picture is fine. The part of the screen that is bad gets darker the longer the set is on. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks Peg

Hi Peg.

If the problem is like the one in this pictures: Sony horizontal lines , then you have a defective LCD panel. Problem is discussed in lot of forums and it is known to technician Here other example.

Unfortunately there is nothing to do. The panel cost is over $1000, and Sony never issued a recall for the problem.

All you can do is calling Sony, complaining that you did not cause the fault, and stating that you used the TV according to manual. The phone person will probably tell you that there is nothing to do, and give the address of a repairman. At that point try escalating the problem to a "second-line" (pass to a manager). If you get someone with more decisional power than the regular first-line phone support person, then you can ask to get a part exchange versus the price of a new Sony.

darker the longer the set is on.

If lines are horizontals, then it is almost 100% the LCD screen. There are different examples with different symptoms. Other parts such as the timer control and main board result in vertical lines because the signal is elaborated one column after the other.

The only other fault that can result in horizontal lines is a progressive scan failure in digital board. That is very rare. Repair is still expensive (about £400). You can diagnose if the problem is related to progressive scan by connecting to a DVD or to a receiver box that is not HD 1080p. Any device connected through AV cables will also be transmitting low definition picture. Alternatively connect a device (LCD, tuner, playstation or camcorder) using the red white and yellow AV cables. If problem is not there, then digital board must be replaced (here part: A Board ). I am afraid that you will get the lines the same. That means that your LCD panel is faulty.

If the screen is only darker in part of it it is still LCD. In that case it is the backlight lamp system that in a TV is part of the LCD screen.

I am not guessing, I am telling you the truth, if you want you can verify by calling Sony support, they will tell you the same thing. An LCD TV with horizontal lines means that the LCD panel must be replaced.

I have a Bravia KDL-52w4500. Over the last month I have started to get more and more horizontal line across the screen. These do not go away. What can I do to fix this

unfortunatly, horizontal lines on an lcd tv, almost always mean a bad lcd panel. if it is out of warranty, it will be really cost prohibitive to replace the panel. if the set is only a year old or so call sony customer support and ask for a concession for the part.

I have a sony bravia televison, screens cracked

Over here in southern California, Wii controller get thrown at the TV. Same kid problems.
Well, there is no way to fix the screen itself, only replacing the screen.
The part# for your lcd screen is 180205911.
I got that part# through They had screens for that model KDL-40S2000, but the cheapest is $1,850. That doesn't make sense to me.
So, I googled the part# "180205911". Only one place has it is
List price $1200, but the sale price is $650.

I googled the model# "KDL-40S200" and then clicked on "shopping". One place called SONY STYLE is selling the TV for $599.95
It maybe better and cheaper to get a new TV from them.

I hope I answered your questions correctly. Please rate me. :)

You should have a 1 year warranty from Sony. Call them before it expires. This is probably a LCD panel issue.
