Hi,

This problem usually occurs if you are using "pirated" Operating System and you are connected to the internet. It also happens if the Windows automatic update feature is turned on. There's a registry tweak that you can find from computer forums but is strongly recommended for advanced users. If you are not comfortable of editing the registry inputs, I suggest you to install a licensed copy of an operating system.

Hope this helps.

It is possible but illegal. So if you wish to not have this issue anymore you have to purchase a legal copy of Windows. Thanks for using FixYa! John

Hello,
If you have a counterfeit windows install you will have to either purchase a valid copy of windows and reinstall the OS, or contact Microsoft for a license for the exact OS you are running. They may be able to give you a license at a reduced price.

It is not possible to remove the software counterfeiting message unless you you reinstall the operating system... After reinstalling the windows, turn off automatic updates in your computer and turn OFF synchronization with windows time server. That will help...
But you have to completely erase and reinstall the operating system on your computer and before connecting it to the internet you have to do all the above settings.

"You may be a victim

Welcome to FixYa!

If you're seeing notifications that the copy of Windows that is installed on your PC might not be genuine, or that you might be a victim of counterfeit software, it's likely that your copy of Windows was not properly activated or is otherwise not genuine. To fix this, click the notification and follow the steps to either repair Windows or-if you have inadvertently obtained counterfeit software-buy genuine Windows.

If you are using Windows XP, download and install the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Application. It will scan your operating system and will remove the annoying message if it's a legitimate copy of windows.

Start Menu And Desktop Icons Are Gone The start menu and desktop icons are gone. When I right click on the desktop nothing happens. I have to do things with the task manager only! How do I get them...

Heya

First of all Start up menu and desktop icon doesn't appears because explorer.exe doesn't loads properly which is a system component file mandatory for the computer to load...Now the solution:-

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL simultaneously ONLY when you don't see any icons or the start up menu
Windows TASK MANAGER will appear.
Now click on FILE top left corner>>>NEW>>Type explorer.exe>>Click OK or enter

You will be able to see all the icons

Now the Software Counterfeiting problem..This happens when your copy of windows doesn't pass the Genuine test..Now this doesn't mean that the copy which your using is not genuine.Even if its not genuine i.e. pirated..there's a common solution for it.
Click on the following link to download and install WGA remover which will remove the Software Counterfeiting problem..

Victim of software Counterfeiting,Problem

To temporarily bypass the problem you can do a system restore to a date before you started having the problem.
If that does not work, boot to safe mode after downloading and installing HijackThis. Start Hijack this software (utility to modify registry values) and scroll down registry entries to the line that says “020 - Winlogon Nofity: Wgalogon - …” select it, and click fix checked.

If you think that your isystem is counterfeit and you had been victim of a scam you should contact the person that sold you the computer, and then contact Microsoft.
See Microsoft Help and Support.
