Question about Toro Garden

Open Question

I think I need to add hydraulic fluid but am not sure of what to put in and what level Wheel Horse 257-H. The sticker says to use SAE 20. Do es that mean regular 20 weight oil? Also, I see no indicator for the level of the oil so I am not sure how much to add.

SOURCE: I have a 8 hp

Your question as I received it did not specify the engine make, but most 8 hp Techumseh, B&S and Powermore engines take 22 to 32 oz of oil. Buy a quart, put two-thirds of the quart in the engine and check the level with the dipstick or fill hole. Add more if needed to come up to the "full" mark.
All the manufactures and Craftsman recommends 5W30 for 4 cycle winter use.
You can use regular sae oil, but I prefer to use Mobil ONE or a heavy duty oil because air cooled engines run hotter than car engines. Look for a SC/SD or greater rating on the bottle.
Change your oil once a year.

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado that slips going from 2nd to 3rd. When you first crank it up it has to warm up before going into reverse. Its a 2 wheel drive. What could it be

Check and make sure that there is enough fluid in the transmission by checking it when it is warmed up, on level ground with the engine running and the gear selector in park or neutral. If the fluid level is too low then add fluid until the level is within the "SAFE" range on the dipstick. If there isn't enough fluid that could cause the symptoms you described. Also, and more importantly, make sure that there isn't too much fluid in the transmission because the fluid can get bubbles in it by the rotating parts in the transmission which will cause hydraulic circuits weaken and basically will quickly wear out the friction materials in the transmission and it will need to be rebuilt. So if there is too much fluid, then I recommend draining the fluid and changing the filter then making sure it has the correct amount.

How do i check fluid for convertable top

"How do I get the air out of my hydraulic system"?
  • Remove the reservoir plug on the motor pump. Leave the plug out and do not put back until you have finished.
  • Fill the reservoir 3/4 full with fluid (to the bottom of filler plug hole). Put a rag under the hole to catch overflow that will occur as system fills.
  • Run the pump for 15-20 seconds. Stop. Check your fluid level and refill to bottom of filler hole. Continue running the motor in the same direction for an additional 15-20 seconds. When the top gets to the end of cycle, check your fluid level, fill to bottom of filler hole, and run the motor in the opposite direction.
  • You are literally running the top all the way up and down sereral times. Checking the fluid level as you go and fill as required, leaving reservoir 25% empty.
  • When you are no longer able to add fluid, put the top in the down position. Check the fluid level one last time, should be to bottom of filler hole. Put the plug into reservoir.

    4. left front wheel

HINT: If any work is done on the brake system or if air in the brake lines is suspected, bleed the air from the system.

NOTICE: Do not let brake fluid remain on a painted surface. Wash it off immediately.

Am replacing power steering pump. Need to know procedure for bleeding fluid from lines and diagram for serpentine belt configuration.

The system will bleed out the air by turning the wheel all the way from one side to the other repeatedly, do this action at least 10 times to be sure all the air is remove from the hydraulic system. Be sure not to allow the fluid level to drop too low or air will get back into the system.

What kind of oil do I use in a Wheel Horse lawn tractor?

Your Onan engine will do excellent with Mobil One 0w40, Mobile One 5w30.

DO NOT use hydraulic oil in the transmission/transaxle, you will destroy it. Your tractor uses an Eaton 11 Hydrostatic transmission pump with the oil resevour being the cast iron transaxle. The WheelHorse transaxle is as rugged as they come. It uses a solid cast iron housing, case hardened intermediate gears and forged differential gears with an eight pinion differential.

Your transaxle requires 10w40 synthetic or conventional oil as well as a wix 51410 filter or the OEM wheelHorse filter. It should be changed every 100 hours with conventional oil or 250 hours with synthetic. DO NOT use hydraulic oil!
