Depending on your motherboard, you most likely have one of two types of data cable sockets. The first being an IDE socket which looks like this: (note the wide ribbon data cable)

where is the socket for - facts717.jpg

The other would be a SATA socket, and is the latest type of data cable you will find on recent mothboards, and it looks like this: (note the skinny cable)

I hope this helps you! Have a great day!

How to connect internet with data cable

Join the computer and router together with a cable, this cable is normally called a cat5 cable and should have come with the router kit, there should be four or five sockets at the back of the router depending on type any will do, obviously the larger sockets anyway the only other one is the telephone input which is smaller and the power adaptor input.

Hi, every time i connect this to my home computer it turns it off! if i turn the computer on with it already connected it turns it off, have done initial set up on work computer and can access ok from...

sounds like your pc's usb socket has a problem, try the following...
1. Try a different usb port,
2. Using a small light (and possibly a magnifying glass) look inside the usb port on the pc for bent pins or distortion within the socket causing the pins to touch something they shouldn't.
3. check the usb cable for minor damage, try a different cable if you can, different machines use different ways of manufacturing sockets making some more sensitive to a damaged plug than others.
The pc turning off is a safety system which prevents power being sent through data ports. If the pc turns off immediately after inserting the usb cable then that's a sure sign that there is a bad connection/short somewhere between the socket and the cable.
Hope this helps.

Want to install a second sata hard drive, new drive not auto detecting, bios only identifies ide drives

HI popsrowe

Your problem is most likely the SATA data and power cables. for tips on the two cables. the system should detect the SATA hard disk automatically,
( you only need, setting the hard disk support as a second hard disk to the system in the bios setup )

I Have vertical lines on my laptop what is causing it and how can I get rid of it. Is it the screen itself or just the inverter. There are five lines and my laptop is a Compaq presairo x6050US.

The inverter simply takes the power from the DC power supply and converts it to high voltage AC for the backlight display. Vertical lines are from a loose or damaged data cable that usually connects on the left side, rear of the display or the lcd panel itself is failing and the lines are usually indicative of this type of failure. If you grap the screen on either side and "torque" it or twist it slightly and the lines go away or are diminished, then there maybe a problem at the socket on the back of the display, this is where the data cable attaches. Over time these sockets can get "wallawed" out and not make good contact. The only repair for this socket damage is lcd panel replacement. I doubt it is the cable, but there is always the chance.

My Hp Pavilion 2000 has wavy display lines on opening laptop, but if lid jiggled backwards it is corrected. Plugged into spare monitor it's OK, also if started when lid open. Doesn't have the overheat...

You most likely are dealing with either a loose connection from the data cable to the lcd panel or the socket on the lcd panel itself is having issues. There are instances when the data cable will rub against the hinges and ground itself through the worn areas of the cable. The bezel on the screen needs to be removed and the cable inspected. Look for wear marks around the hinge area and then remove the screws on the side of the panel that attach to the hinge arms, this will allow access to the back of the panel to inspect the socket and cable connection.

I bought a new laptop from Dell. My old on is a desktop from Dell. I have a Belkin transfer cable. It is asking for a transfer key number. what is that????????

Please note that your cable will support below givne O/S check at your end.

One destination PC running Windows 7 (32- or 64-bit) and available USB port

One source PC running Windows® XP (32- or 64-bit) or Windows Vista® (32- or 64-bit) and available USB port

For Example two Pcs 1 is Xp and other pcs is Windows 7, then try to connect between both .

Another one more option is there for transfering the data between two systems either laptop or Desktop by a cross cable (LAN CABLE), buy a cross cable from shop and insert into RJ45 Socket (i.e lan socket) the try to transfer the datas.

Hard drive data cable was removed

The red side of an IDE cable lines up with pin 1 of the hard drive, closest to the power socket on the hard drive, and pin 1 of the motherboard.
Depending on your drive, Maxtor has videos of the installation process at their support site, available by clicking here
