Question about Lexmark X4270 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Have Lexmark 4200 series all-in-one center. I just replaced black cartridge (71) and it keeps giving us an message - Black Cartridge Missing. The tape is off, I've unplugged it, I search for the #71 and it doesn't seem to be in the menu. It more looks like the numbers for the color cartridge. We use this machine a lot. Please help. Thanks

It could be that your cartridge needs some cleaning or the cartridge is not seated properly in the carrier. Open the printer cover. Remove the cartridge and wipe the cartridge nozzles with a moistened soft cloth to clean it from dirts and clogs. Close the printer cover. Unplug and replug the printer into the power outlet in the wall to reset it. When the printer turns on, reinsert the black cartridge and make sure it's properly inserted.

If the it's a remanufactured cartridge (not genuine), the printer will not detect the ink in the cartridge.
If it's genuine, you might want to give Lexmark's technical support a call to have the cartridge replaced.

Make sure you are using genuine Lexmark black cartridge. Lexmark does not recommend the use of refilled, re-manufactured or clone cartridges. You might not get the print quality you expect from ink that is specially formulated by Lexmark.
Try to reinsert your black cartridge and make sure it is properly seated in the cartridge carrier. If error comes back up right after placing it in the printer, then it could be a faulty cartridge. Try to replace it with a new genuine Lexmark cartridge. If you are already using a genuine Lexmark cartridge, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.

My printer keeps saying that the black ink is missing. Why?


Make sure your black cartridge is not very low on ink or empty. Otherwise, replace it with new genuine cartridges.
It could be a communication problem between your black cartridge and your printer. Try to re-seat the black cartridge into the printer.
It could also be a short in your black cartridge. Try to insert a different known working black cartridge. Better yet, replace it with a new genuine Lexmark cartridge.

Try to clean the cartridge nozzles using the Lexmark Solution Center on your computer. Launch the application from All Programs > Lexmark 1200 Series Printer > Tools > Lexmark Solution Center. From the Maintenance tab, select Clean to fix horizontal lines. Your printer will then print a page forcing ink through the cartridge nozzles and clean them. Once done, try to print again and check if black is printing properly now. If that doesn't help, try to insert a different known working black cartridge to determine if the other is fautly.

What is error 1208 or 1203. my printer is saying both the black and color cartridges are missing when they are in the printer

Cartridge Error: 1203 Your print cartridge has a short.
  1. Press Power to turn your All-In-One off.
  2. Unplug your All-In-One from the wall outlet.
  3. Plug in your All-In-One.
  4. Reinstall the cartridges.

I have a lexmark X4270 fax machine, and I have just got a new black ink cartridge. The old one was a lexmark 71 the man at Quill said to get a lexmark 75 hi-yield. so I did my machine keeps saying black...


Did Quill sell you a "OEM" (Original Manufacturer's Equipment) or a cartridge a third party cartridge?

If it is a third party ink or cartridge, then that's your problem. Lexmark does not condone the use of third party ink or cartridges. This is considered to be product tampering by Lexmark and they will void the printer warranty if damage results from the use of these type cartridges.

I do apologize for the bad news, but I do ask that you do not shoot the messenger. :-)

Error Message 1203??


These steps are for a Lexmark 4200, but I suspect they will work for your printer as well:

Cartridge Error: 1203

Your print cartridge has a short.

1. Press Power to turn your All-In-One off.
2. Unplug your All-In-One from the wall outlet.
3. Plug in your All-In-One.
4. Reinstall the cartridges.

If this does not resolve the problem, see More troubleshooting options, or replace your cartridges.
