Question about Samsung LN46A650 46 in. LCD HDTV

1 Answer

Power cycling with green screen on our LCD TV - we had a repairman in DEC and he tightened some screws inside and it's been fine for 5 months. What now - we don't want to invest another $250 in repair charge.

Thank you for your quick response. It seems a bit more than I can deal with. I wouldn't recognize a capacitor from a cap pistol, let alone know how to remove and replace one. I will check out the youtube videos, as you suggest.

Should I need to junk this set, can you recommend a more reliable brand of TV to purchase?

    Thanks, and God bless.

From some research my wife did this morning, there were many, many complaints as to Samsung customer NO service. Can you suggest brands with a better track record in that respect? Thanks.

There's a good chance you have failing electrolytic capacitors either in the power section or the inverter section or both.
Any caps in these sections that look bulged at the top, or bulged/leaking at the bottom need to be replaced.
If you repeatedly turn it off and on, eventually it'll probably stay on, but every time you turn it off, the TV will get harder and harder to start up until one day it just won't.
Sometimes you have to do the opposite to start it up and unplug it for some time and then try again.

If you aren't tech savvy, don't worry, read the rest of this solution and watch the videos.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and can identify the power supply and inverter / FM section for the backlights, an inexpensive handful of capacitors will likely fix you right up.
Match the capacitance on the capacitors. Go over voltage if you can, and still have them fit.
IE - it's not a bad idea to replace a 10V cap with a 16V or 25V or even a 50V, but don't replace a 680uF cap with a 500uF or a 1000uF (unless you are positive it's only doing ripple filtering, and even then, you should go OVER, not under the uF rating).

Most of the caps that go are 10V 1000uF or 3300uF.

I found some great videos of the procedure (for many Samsungs with the same issue) on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l0AUj8QUkg&NR=1&feature=fvwp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7b_nTaZYcU&feature=related

As you can see, this issue spans plasma TVs, as well as large and small LCD TVs and monitors.
The parts are cheap, and skill required is minimal.

This issue isn't brand specific, but most manufacturers have resolved this issue by using more expensive but more reliable capacitors, so the short answer is that almost any brand should be fine these days.

Not being one that calls for service often, as I fix things myself, I can't really say in that respect.
When you go online, you will always see the complaints as few people post praise for any manufacturer, but almost always post complaints.
I know HP has great service because I used to work for them, however, I don't think HP makes TV sets.

Why does my Sony Google TV NSX-46GT1 46 in. HDTV LCD TV powers up, displays application screen on bottom, makes a computer chime and shuts off completely, and starts the same process over and over aga

If your LCD TV or monitor has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following symptoms, then it's a candidate for some new capacitors
- Flickering screen
- Screen image disappears after several seconds
- Dim screen
- Slow start
- Power LED on, but no picture
- Unusual colors and/or lines
The primary cause of LCD TV and monitor failure is caused by faulty capacitors. You can examine the capacitors in your LCD TV or monitor and actually see if they are bad.
If they appear bulged on top, then they need to be replaced.
New capacitors will solve a host of problems in LCD monitors and TV's and will extend the life of your monitor or TV by several years.
Check the cables, connectors and connections.
Take it to a repair shop.

Can't find screw size to fit back of my 42in Toshiba Regza. I want to mount on wall. Screws that came with the 42in wall mount don't fit it. It's not a 5/16, 6mm, 8mm fine thread or course thread

M8 - according to a document I found online for a Toshiba mounting bracket kit for their LCD TVs the bolt size is M8. It should be easily available in a large hardware store or place that sells large flat screens.
Make sure you hand tighten it into the mounting hole before attaching any brackets, to judge the proper depth for tightening. Over-tightening with a long bolt could damage the TV.

Is there a red L-E-D power light beneath the screen? that is the power off light(red). Watch closely to see if that red light momentarily turns green and then immediately red again when you are attempting to turn the tv on, that indicates a bad power supply. There are replacement power supplies on ebay. Be sure that the positive (+) is the center hole of the plug. Most likely all of them are. The output plug is 5.5mm x 2.5mm in size.

Light green and pink spots on my hd tv!!!

Tiny particles of dust on the light engine lens can cause this (and was a service call for me about a month ago), or possibly the expensive light engine.
