No connection with router

I get an internet connection when I connect directly from modem to PC, but no connection when the router is connected in between. How do we determine the problem?

This may be a lengthy description, but I just wanted to be as forthcoming as I could, as I was annoyed by the lack of support I was able to find to fix this problem myself. As far as I understand it, the problem is in the router. I don't know what it "thinks" it's doing, but the solution detailed below will essentially just tell it to do the basic things it should be doing.

What I had to do to fix this (Same router model, same issue) was to unplug every cable from the back of the router (including the cat-5 cable coming from the modem and going into the WAN port), except for the computer that I know works when plugged directly into the modem. I left the modem turned on, though disconnected from the router.

The point of this was to have a simple connection between computer and router so that I could get into the router and tweak its settings. For some reason it was freezing up on me when the modem was plugged in and I could not access the router at all. So, after plugging in only this computer to the router, I unplugged the power to the router, waited about a minute, and plugged it back in. When the router first turns on all of the lights on the front come on. Wait for all of the numbered ones to go off (by 'numbered' I mean the lights numbered 1-4 on the right side of the front panel display) except the one that corresponds to your computer's connection port in the rear of the router (the number your computer is plugged into).

Once this has happened you should be able to get into your router through a web browser by putting "" (no quotes) into the address bar. The default username/password combination (which you should be prompted to put in) is "admin" for the user name, and leave the password field blank.

You should now be viewing the router's page, which should by default be showing the "SETUP" tab. If we cant fix the router by renewing your DHCP (as detailed below), then we will return to this page.

For now, plug the cable from the back of your modem into WAN port on the back of the router. Click on the "STATUS" tab (3 buttons to the right of SETUP), and look under the "WAN" heading. Note that the settings (I'll refer to them as "WAN Settings") displayed under this heading are as follows:

MAC Address
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway

If it says "Connection : DHCP Client Connected" and there are numbers besides just zeroes for the lower WAN settings, then your internet should be working. Verify this in a new window by attempting to browse to your homepage or google or something. If it does not work, or if the Connection status is not connected, then click the "DHCP Renew" button directly to the right of the "Connection" setting.

A number of things could happen here. If it works, the WAN settings should no longer display only zeroes (you may have to navigate back to this page). If the DHCP renew attempt times out or doesnt work, then navigate back to the "SETUP" tab on the main page of the router (the page we started on).

There should be a button in the middle of the page under the "Internet Connection Wizard" heading labeled "Setup Wizard". Click it, then click it again as it changes to "Launch Internet Connection Setup Wizard". The four steps are:

  • Step 1: Set your Password
  • Step 2: Select your Time Zone
  • Step 3: Configure your Internet Connection
  • Step 4: Save Settings and Connect

For the "configure your internet connection" step, click the button that copies your MAC address. At the end of this process your router will be reset. Again, wait for the lights on the front of the router to display properly before signing back in. You will have to sign back in afterwards using your new password (admin should still be the username). At this point it worked for me. If it is still not working, go to the STATUS page again and renew the DHCP (same step as before) now that you have run the setup wizard. Good luck, hope this solves it for ya!

Your ISP allows only one device to connect to their network.
When you change devices (router versus computer),
you need to power-off the ISP's modem, and unplug it.
Connect the router to the modem, and connect your computer to your router.
Plug the modem back in, and the modem will "forget" what device was previously connected.

Hi there,
I see that you have replaced you modem. Have you tried connecting your pc directly to the modem? If you do not have any internet connection when connected directly to the modem, you have to call your Internet Service Provider to setup your new modem. If you can access the internet using your new modem then there is a problem with the router. You have to re-setup your router to make it work.

My acer aspire one wont connect to internet. it says it is connected to wireless, and i have wired it to modem but the problem still persists. please help.

Based on your description, the following is assumed.
1. The service to your Internet Service Provider is through a cable or DSL modem.
2. Internet service was initially set-up with your netbook directly connected to the modem.
3. A wireless router was since added and is using the direct wired connection to the modem.
4. The netbook is connected to the wireless access point being provided by the router.
5. The netbook says it is connected to the wireless access point but still no internet access.
The problem is likely due to the modem capturing the MAC address of the netbook when access to the internet servce was initially set up using the netbook directly connected to the modem and now the modem will only allow access with the netbook directly connected to it. You can check this out by reconnecting the netbook directly to the modem. It may be possible to "flush" the captured MAC by unplugging the AC power to the modem, waiting a few minutes and then powering back up with the router connected in place of the netbook. To make it easier, you may want connect your netbook directly to the router's LAN side to check if you now have internet access through the router. If you still don't have internet access, you will need to use your netbook to log onto the router to clone your netbook's MAC address for the router's WAN connection. The router's user guide/manual has directions on logging in and doing the MAC address clone. It will also have an explanation as to what is a MAC address.

I can connect to the router but the router cant connect to the internet. If i directly connect the internet connection to my pc, it has internet connections, so the router is not connecting to the...

Firstly please check the connections. The modem should be connected to the "Internet" port on the back of the router. And the computer can be connected to any of the 4 ports of the router. Checked the lights. They should be steady. If you have a cable connection (cable modem) than you can connect directly to the internet. Else if you are using a DSL connection than you need to configure the router according.

Unable to connect to the internet using a linksys wireless adapter. Connects to the router but can't find the internet.

Isolate the issue by directly connecting the PC to the router via ethernet cable (if possible).

If you were able to get online while hardwired connected to the router, then check the IP address of the wireless network connection, check the wireless security if the network key matches.

If you cannot get online while hardwired to the router, then directly connect the computer to the modem.

If you were able to get online while directly connected to the modem, then the problem is the internet settings on the router. Check the WAN configuration, such as DHCP or PPPoE.

If you cannot get online when directly connected to the modem, then you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider.

I have set everything up but its not working. The computer is showing a full bar, but the internet connection is saying its not connected.

  • make sure that the modem has internet when connecting directly to the PC.
  • or else call your ISP
  • if internet is ok, check the cable from modem, is connected to the WAN/internet port/isolated port of the router,
  • then the PC is connected to any of the 4 ports of the LAN ports of the router,
  • then call your router brand manufacturer support to configure your router if the connection still to configure your router to get IP address from the modem

Belkin 54G won't connect to the internet

Are you sure your modem is giving a WAN IP from your ISP? Try power-cycling your modem with your router unplugged then bring up your router next, if you havent tried that already... After that try connecting your modem directly to a PC and set your NIC card to DHCP and see if you get an IP address thats routable to the internet (i.e not a private IP)

Router doesnt connect to internet

This sounds like a problem with your DSL modem, not the router. Try unplugging both devices and wait about 10 seconds. Plug in the modem first and wait about 30 seconds (at this point the Internet light should be on). Now plug in the router and wait another 30 seconds. This problem is normally due to the modem not getting sync. I would try plugging your laptop directly into modem if this doesn't work to see if you then have Internet. If not call your ISP.

Use of router in network

Try reset the router & cable modem. There ia a reset (very small) button on the back of the wireless router & the modem. Disconnect the power cords to both. Use a pen & hold in for 10 seconds (router & modem). Re-connect power (router & modem) & restart PC. If your service still has not returned. Chances are it's your internet provider & not you. Double check by connecting your modem directly to your PC.

L2TP connection problem

Hello, I've had the electric cut off and immediately back on and I lost my connection from Wireless router to modem. I could not connect in the same way. I could access the router settings with wireless laptop and PC but not to internet on either. I bypassed the router and connected the PC computer to modem then to internet verifying with a browser. I then reconnected the computer cable back to router and router to modem. It stayed connected. But I'm not sure if you have a PC connected to the router also. Sometimes just unplugging some cables and replugging will solve problems. Hope this helps.
