Question about Garden

Open Question

I have a Poulan Pro 54" riding mower, 25 HP Kohler. The problem is the steering. It turns all the way left no problem, but will only turn about 2/3 to the right. I though maybe the drag link was bent, replaced with no luck. Nothing appears to be damaged....but I guess anything is possible. Final note: when I max out the steering to the left to the steering stop....I've noticed there is still a few teeth left on the steering shaft area...can you help? Thanks for your time.

How many teeth are left on the steering shaft area when you turn it to the right as far as it will go? Maybe you are just off center?

Looks like about 3 teeth left...not actually on the steering shaft....but the "fan" gear that it drives

re-read your comment....when I turn to the LEFT...it has the 3 teeth remaining...almost like if the steering stop wasn't there,,,it'd turn some more! when I max out to the right (maxed out where the steering shaft drives the fan gear) there is still plenty more to go at the steering stop near the front wheels...hope this clarifies my prob

SOURCE: I tipped my poulan riding mower up from the right to check belt

If you remove the plug(s) so that the oil all drains back down, and some will drain back out of the muffler, it should start. But give a at least one day, maybe two. You may still have to put new plug(s) in it after it's gone. Check the fuel filter and see if you can see oil in it.

Take off the air cleaner when you get ready to start it and spray just a little starting fluid in the carb, Don't choke it. It will run rough and smoke like crazy, but after it runs a while it should be fine. It make take a few starts before it continues to run. At first it may run just on the starting fluid, but once the plugs fire up enough to burn the oil out it should run on its own.

Be sure and check the oil and if it seems like the slightest amount of gas in it, change the oil and filter.

Let us know how it comes out!

SOURCE: craftsman riding lawn mower steering shaft fell.

Look under the seat of your tractor and note the complete Model number.
(usually begins with 917. _ _ _ _ _ _ )

Next, go to THIS PAGE and use the Model Number to find an exploded view of the steering components and how they assemble.

Hope this helps,

SOURCE: My craftsman 15.5HP kohler riding mower turns over

Try cleaning or better yet, replacing the spark plug. Depending on age and how your tractor was maintained, there are other possible causes.

  • Gummed up fuel system
  • dirty fuel filter
  • defective or misaligned armature/magneto (part that causes your plug to spark, igniting the air/fuel mixture, thus starting the engine)
  • throttle linkage/cable problems
  • low oil level. Some Kohler engines use a low oil shut down sensor which won't allow the engine to run or start to avoid internal damage.
  • Mechanical engine problems
I hope you find this solution helpful. Please rate it thanks for using Fixya!

Turns fine to the left but will not turn right past going straight.

check your steering linkage on the front side by that right hand wheel, is it bent or being restricted? Even check up and down on the steering wheel column itself.
