Hi,
To verify the remote control for malfunction, using your cellphone camera, directly point the remote conrol infrared emitter to your camera. You will see a flash of infrared to the camera while pressing the button that are working in the remote. Click the sample video below.

Once you confirmed that the remote was already faulty, you may take it apart and spray with electrical contact cleaner to the board.
You may also replaced the remote control. Click this LINK.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.
your remote control is also available at ebay, let me know if you want the link.
If the remote control is not faulty, the unit must take apart and check the sensor with an ohmmeter. Check also if there's bad solder joints around its circuitry. One leg of the sensor has a supply voltage, check this also if this is present...
Based on your comment the problem is in the system IC, this IC control the command from the remote control. If the other command can't be executed by the unit, high chance that this is faulty...
Also to consider here, even the remote control flashes in the camera(indicating that it emits frequency), if the frequency isn't accurate at all, it will not recognize by the system IC in the unit.
There's a specific frequency assign for every command...
check for 5vdc supply, you must have a disoldering pump and soldering iron. This IC has a part no. listed on the top.

I knew I could check the infrared on the remote with the camera, I should have mentioned it is fine - flashes away nicely on all buttons. Does this mean the problem is in the SoundDock, if so do you have a fix?
OK jdv, I'll check for that supply voltage on the sensor and dry joints around the IC in the SoundDock. What voltage am I looking for? 5v? I guess the IC is surface mount, do you know what it is, is it readily available and how difficult is it to replace on the circuit board?
Even from new control with the remote was dicky we should have chased it up on warranty!
I'll let you know what I find
There appears to be no supply voltage at the sensor, but I found 3v where the ribbon cable connects to the remote sensor board. ? sounds like a problem on the board? Should I get a replacement sensor board? If so where from?
I note on other forums that this seems to be a fairly common problem ? with older SoundDocks, my Serial No is 04029396261991AE.
