Sorry this is too late, perhaps it will be useful to others. I hope you used a different lens for the wedding!

You can't use the 50mm 1.8 lens on the D40x unless you focus manually. This is because the D40x only supports autofocus with AF-S and AF-I lenses. The focus motor and drive mechanism for other AF lenses was omitted to make the camera smaller, lighter and cheaper.

The D40 is a low end camera, but before you discard it, I would contact the closest Nikon repair depot (see the Nikon website for the location) and ask them for a repair estimate. You will then be able to decide if it is better to have it repaired or replace it with a newer model.

Do Nikon duplicate (re-use) serial numbers on different models of DSLR?

They reuse serial numbers. You need both the model and the serial number to uniquely identify a camera.

I have had the Nikon D40 for about 4 years. It has performed wonderfully and I love it. Just recently, the battery suddenly died (in one hour it went from 3 bars to one) and after several failed attempts...

cscolantoni: I have the same problem. I called APS, a Nikon approved repair company and they are going to test it. They said it was very rare and thought it was an internal problem and not the battery. Could run up to $200 to repair.

The D40 will not take great photos of an indoor event without blurring or noise. You need a fast lens and a high ISO using the popup flash or on camera flash would be ideal but some of these events you can not use flash. All these images I shot with a Nikon D40. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?src=fftb#/pages/Keller-TX/Raving-Design/78762448229?v=photos&ref=ts Learn to use the camera for ur events. Experiment it's all about trial and error. Ray

Hey timrowan,
What you’re seeing is your playback mode is set to highlight, which flashes all the highlights (bright areas) of your images that are overexposed. If you don't like this viewing option you should be able to change your viewing mode by pressing mutiselector button to the right or left until you get to normal viewing. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan
