Try to remove one of the plastic baffles inside the spin basket. They are held in place by one phillips head screw. If you take that screw out you should be able to slide the baffle toward you and remove it. Sometimes, but not always, in manufacturing they move a little catch to keep the baffle from moving; in that case it will be hard to slide it. If you can get one baffle out, you will have a pretty good size opening to look for your screw.

Can I safely use my washer if I hear something metal scraping during spin cycle?

You can, but I wouldn't. The outer skin of the drum is made of plastic. If it is a coin, it could dislodge, get caught again in mid spin and punch a hole straight through the plastic.

Get a flashlight and look between the seal and the outer drum when you open the door.

Why is drum rattling?

Typically there are 2 reasons for this. Either, you have something trapped in the drum (Underwire Bra wires are the favorite for getting through the holes on the drum, getting caught near the bottom of the drum and making a horrible rattling scrape), OR your bearings are failing. If it's bearings then typically the noise will be far far louder on spin than on wash and you may have found bits of plastic and grey or greasy residue in your washing. This detritus will be from the grease in the bearings and small scrapings of the outer plastic drum, created as the inner drum, spinning erratically, catches it some of the time. If it's the latter, then sadly it's typically an uneconomical repair. Bearing replacements usually cost around £140, at which point you end up with an old machine, with one good part in it, which is questionable economics! If it is a "sealed drum" (that is to say, the drum cant be dismantled and the 2 halves of the outer drum are chemically bonded together during manufacture), then you are looking at the cost of replacing the entire drum, which usually works out at between 60%-75% of the cos of the machine when you bought it new.

Kenmore Elite H3 washer's loud in spin cycle & smells burnt.Debris & plastic in well inside washer.Pushed aside rubber ring & saw lg. gap btwn. metal drum & surrounding plastic.Parts needing replace?

It sounds like the drum has broken from the rear mount. This will chew up the outer shell. This is a very labor extensive job. The parts are expensive also. You will probably need a new outer shell and inner drum.

Bangs and sqeels during high spin cycle, also there are plastic shavings in sink

This could be an easy fix if the counter weight came loose from the top of the tub shell which is a common problem causing banging. Unplug the unit and pull the unit out from the wall disconnection the water hoses after turning of the water. Remove the back panel to inspect the counter weight, spider pulley and belt. If the counter weight is not broken you can reattach it to tub shell and retighten the bolts. If it is broke it is about $30.00 plus shipping. Inspect the spider pulley which is attached to the tub with the belt around it. If it is not broken, you can turn the pulley by hand to check the tub bearings for free movement. Make sure the belt is in good shape and attached to the motor spindle and spider pulley. If the spider pulley is broken you may have to order a new pulley. If you have to remove the spider pulley you may want to use a gear puller from an auto parts store to remove the pulley. If you turn the pulley by hand you should not hear scraping. If you do in could be the bearings or a screw is rubbing against the shell. If you have to replace the outer tub shell (approximately $300.00 for parts only). I would unbolt the bolts holding the shell and find where the tub or screw is rubbing so you do not have to replace the expensive shell.

Washing machine makes a loud banging noise during cycle and when I check it the machine has changed position (unit is turned slightly sideways) How to correct

Hi
Does this happen every time???
If YES... then the machine is not balanced on the floor well.... the 4 stands on which the machine rests have adjustable screws... You will need to fasten or loosen the nuts that will adjust the height of the legs on which the machine rests.... all the 4 legs need to be firmly on the floor .... If one is too high then the machine rocks on its side...

If NO.. only sometimes...
You are overloading the machine with heavy clothes... distribute your wash clothes by weight...

Berry

Front load whirl pool - broken tub front

From your description, what it sounds like is one of the drum supports has broken on the back of the spin basket (inner steel basket) and chewed up the outer wash tub shell. The outside perimeter of the spin basket is rough like a cheese grater and will cause significant damage if used after one of the drum supports breaks. The spin basket is not supposed to come in contact with the outer tub shell. I have seen this problem several times and it will require (at a minimum) the front tub shell, tub gasket and inner spin basket to correct the problem. The estimated costs could be:

Front Tub Shell - $221
Spin Basket - $146
Tub Gasket - $9

If my math skills are correct, that's $376 in parts. Depending on the damage, you may end up having to replace the Rear Tub shell as well, which would add another $242 on to the cost. That's a total of about $618.

All these prices are before any shipping costs and only if you wish to pursue the repair yourself. Most appliance repair companies will add over $300 in labor alone.

I do have instructions on how to replace the spin basket, but it is labor intensive.

You need to ask yourself if this is worth the $600 in parts to repair, or would it be wise to purchase a new one. I wish I had better news for you.

To dispell any rumors or myths, this problem is know in the field. It is not common, but it does happen. Some of the welds on the back of the spin basket have been known to break causing the tub to spin off balance. This is not something that the average consumer will cause to happen, unless you consistently overload the washer. I do not know of any recourse you have at this point because the appliance is 8 years old.

If you wish to pursue this repair, please let me know. I hope I have been of some help even though it may not be pleasant news to hear.

Hi I have a Whirlpool 6th Sense Washing Machine - AWM8143. I is washing and spinning perfectly well and there are no error codes. However when it spins the machine makes a grating squeaking noise that is...

hi,
looks like there is some friction between the main and outer tub of your machine. there is generally a mechanism for smooth spinning of the machine in good rpms for wash-spin cycle. this could be because of rust formation, or mud collection. please refer your manual and remove the 3 screws behind the lower front plastic cover, and look for rust formation. scrape the rust and try spinning again.

cheers

Electrolux FGX831FS1 dryer drum, only spins one way manually

Check inside the drum to make sure the three screws in a triangle in the rear center are all there, if they fall out the drum goes off center and the motor can no longer drive it.
This model has no rollers, the front of the drum has plastic glides mounted on the front of the drum that ride on teflon impregnated pads that are glued around the door.
The rear is supported by a steel ball screwed to the rear of the drum (the 3 screws that I think are causing your troubles) that rides in a plastic saddle screwed to the rear of the machine.
If the excess drum movement is only up and down you should replace the front glide system.
Good Luck

Plastic piece stuck between drums

First remove power from the washer. The top panel #2 in the diagram can be removed by removing the two screws in back. The kick panel #16 also has two screws that hold it in place. From there you should be able to find what you lost. Best of luck!

Washer problems

Hi there!

The problem is probably the main drum bearing at the back.

Isolate power and water supplies.

The top will have to come off,(screws along top edge at back), then the motor mount slackened to remove the belt. Then try rotating the drum by hand, If the noise is still there, check for any items lodged between metal drum, and the outer plastic wash tub. If everything is clear, The noise will be from the rear bearing, which needs to be replaced.

I can assist you further with this.
