Question about GE Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

All of the control buttons on my microwave/hood (except 2) are non-responsive. Our cleaner was here the day before we noticed it. She has cleaned for us for two years and there was not a problem until now. If the controls somehow got wet, is there any way of resetting them, drying them our or repairing them? It is going to be a real chore to get it out.

Possibly some water or cleaning liquid got inside the touch panel. The touch panel has several layers of plastic material. If water got in between it would eventually evaporate. You could speed it up by carefully warm it with a hair dryer (on low). If cleanser got in the control it could cause parmenent paths for electricity to flow in which case you would need to replace the touch pad. One thing you could try (if you are really handy) you could take the touch pad out and soak it in distilled water (it is no good anyway) and then dry it. Good luck.

  5. Touchpad/Control panelIf the control board is not the issue and your microwave continues to shut off after running for only a few seconds, the next thing to check is your touchpad, which is also known as a control panel. Although uncommon for this issue, symptoms are usually that the display and some buttons are working properly; however, when selected some buttons are not functioning. If this is the case the touchpad will need to be replaced.

but can not program unit, Touchpad dead If you have a stuck key or non-responsive key, most of the time you will have to replace the keypad for this microwave oven repair. If your keypad is connected to your control board by a flat ribbon wire, try disconnecting it and clean the silver contacts with an ordinary pencil eraser. After cleaning, plug it back in and try it. If it doesn't fix it, replace the keypad unit. Some units actually have keypad tests to confirm your diagnosis of a bad key.If your keypad and control is the same unit, replace that unit. Another note, unlike stove/oven keypads and controls, most microwaves do not have error codes or tests to distinguish whether it is truely the keypad or control. Most of the time, it is the keypad that needs replacing, but a small percentage of the time it can be the control. Check the tech sheet if they can point you to the right part.

Sounds like a failing or wet keypad or *maybe* the controller.

Is it possible that some spray cleaner accidentally got into the controls?

I always recommend that users spray the cleaner on a soft cloth (not on the keypad itself) then wipe the control panel off.

Also, I always recommend non-ammonia cleaners since ammonia can crack and damage plastic.

Otherwise, the spray can get into the controls and lock it up or make it act odd.

If it does not dry out over time, it may need to be manually dried or blown out.

The keypad may be damaged or worn out, or control unit may be damaged.

This can usually be fixed economically, but please look over this response and then I'd be happy to help further.

Please rely back to this thread if possible when leaving replies.
