Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

1 Answer

My disposal turns freely with the tool provided and nothing appears to be stuck. When I turn the switch on it runs for maybe 20 seconds then the reset button pops and it turns off and smells hot. Any idea on what the problem may be?

If the disposal had previously been stuck, or running very hard for a long time, then the motor is probably partially burned out. When this happens, the insulation on the windings melts a little, which shorts them out making the effective turns of wire in the coil less, making the resistance lower, making the coil even hotter. Motor burn-out tends to be a run-away kind of thing. You might be able to get by for a while just running it very briefly, but I think you are running on borrowed time. Sorry. Good luck, Al K

Will not drain...but is turning....i tried to reset by pushing the red button and did nothing...i took the L wrench and turned it from the bottom and still nothing...sink is full of water too..what can i...

1) If disposal will not drain: Clean the tubular drain under sink.
Remove 2 nuts on p-trap, and trap falls loose, then remove tailpiece on side of disposal, hand rag over opening to direct water downward, turn on water, turn on disposal and see if disposal empties, clean p-trap, and then reassemble tubular drain.

2) If disposal will not drain and will not run: Clean tubular drain, check for power to disposal.
If disposal is getting power and will not run, and reset button is not tripped out, and cutter disk rotates freely, then disposal is bad.

I wrote ez disposal replacement steps that include tips for tubular drain.

The blades dont wok. it hums

Sounds like something is stuck in disposal, or disposal has gone bad.

Turn off switch.
Put wood broomstick into disposal opening and see if cutter disk rotates freely.
If disk is stuck, use broom stick to wedge cutter disk free.

If there are pieces of glass, metal or bone that need to be removed, use vacuum cleaner, pliers-taped-to-paint-sticks, coat hanger, pry bar, big screwdriver or anything you can get down into disposal. Disposals are usually not harmed by banging and prying to remove stuff, but it might loosen tubular drain pipes below.

If disk rotates freely, and it has electric power (humming sound says motor is getting power), then disposal is probably busted.

How do I know that my disposal is actually working? It sounds right but I just had a clog after the displosal and it looked like good size pieces of food were passed right thru the disosal. Is the top...

The top grinder is supposed to spin around freely.

When something gets stuck:
Turn off switch.
Stick a wood broom handle down into disposal.
Wedge broom handle against sink opening and push grinder disk until it spins freely.

If you get stuff in the disposal like broken glass:
Stick vacuum hose in and remove the glass or bones, or whatever.
Most disposals will chew up chicken bones.
But heavier bones will not go down without considerable racket.

In sinkerator will only "hum" and not run to grind food

On The bottom of the unit there should be a place to put an allen wrench. Unplug unit, Insert wrench and turn the wrench back and forth this moves the blades if the blades move freely then nothing is stuck. If wrench does not move freely, with flash light inspect inside of disposal (the rubber flaps are usually removable to gain better eye site) if objects (bones, utensil, etc) are noticed remove them and try the wrench again if now freed problem solved. If wrench turned freely from the beginning and motor still hums. Replace disposal.

I hope this has answered your question, please rate how helpful the answer was. Good Luck and Have a great day.

MY BADGER 5 HAS POWER TO IT AND ATEMPTS TO TURN BUT WON'T, WHEN YOU TURN IT MANNUALY IT SEEMS GUMMED UP HARD TO TURN,AL OF THE BLADES ARE FREE AND NOTHING IS IN IT

Be aware that the wheel that makes up the entire floor of the grinding chamber is the part that rotates. There are two lugs mounted on this wheel that rotate freely, but they are not driven by the motor. There's a hole in the bottom middle of the disposer where you can insert an allen wrench (there may be a special disposer tool already in the cabinet) and turn the motor manually. If the motor does turn freely, but the disposer still hums and doesn't stat, that'll mean there's a problem with the motor's starter circuit. You or a motor repair shop could open up the motor and check the resistance of the windings, the centrifugal starter switch, etc., but your best value at this point, especially with an entry level model such as a badger 5, is to replace the disposer. If you get another one made by insinkerator you can install the new one in like three steps.

1 Answer

Disposal is not turning

Take the tool that came with the disposer. On the bottom, you will find a square shaped hole.
This is to turn the motor manually. Try in both directions. If the motor turns freely, but the blades do not spin, they have broken from the motor shaft and there is no repair.

Humms but blades don't move. the blades move freely. the reset button did not fix it. thank you.

Try placing the allen wrench into the socket on the underside of the disposer and working it back and forth, then trying it electrically. The blades can appear to be free, even with a jam. The moving of the inner workings with the allen wrench should free it all up. Flush the disposer with a potful of ice and water when it turns freely.

I have a Badger 5 that will not turn on. The blade freely turns by hand, but unit will only hum like the motor is locked. Suggestions.

Use and allen wrench underneath in the center of the disposal. Does the shaft turn freely? If it does, the capacitor is bad. If the shaft won't turn, there is something stuck inside the disposal.

Compressor will not start

It is a good sign that the motor turns freely with and without air. That indicates that you have good bearings and that the intank check valve is in good condition. Next you should check the capacitors and the condition of the windings. Some motors have start and run capacitors and others only have run cap. Remove from the circuit and test with meter having cap. test setting. Most shops will test them for free. The cap should test within 95% of stated ( uf ) value. Replace as needed. Finally check that the flyball switch at rear inside of motor is functioning correctly. At rest, switch is at start winding, then a split second after start, it shifts to run winding. Check contacts are not stuck and that switch is working and lastly that the winding are the color of new penny. Good luck.
