Question about Milwaukee Tool 3/8" 12 V Cordless Variable - Speed Drill

1 Answer

My older Milwaukee 12v variable speed 3/8" reversible drill has a problem with the keyless chuck...it slips, regardless of where I've set the torque limiting controls. Can you assist, please? Thank you, Mark in Modesto

Thank you, Andrew, but I'm afraid I mis-described my problem. It's not the chuck, but the clutch assembly which is slipping, and I'm not sure how to get into it for a close internal inspection. I'd lock it up solid, like a real drill, if only I knew how...

All you can do is replace the chuck. Any good hardware store will have a replacement.

How to insert bit for Black and Decker 3/8 Variable Speed Reversing Drill.

Most new cordless drills don't have a key(keyless chuck). Put the drill in reverse and hold tight to the chuck barrel, pull trigger and the chuck will open. Opposite to close/tighten Best I can do with info provided

How do I change a bit

This drill uses a keyless chuck. which means you have to hold onto the barrel by the end of the drill chuck. Then you need to put the drill in reverse to open the chuck to put a bit in. Insert a bit and then put the drill back into forward and hold chuck to tighten.

I have a DR250 and I can't get the chuck open

I've run into this from time to time, usually have to fix it with two pairs of channel locks, one on each collar on the chuck. With the drill facing you, hold the inner collar steady and turn the outer collar counter-clockwise.
The chuck should not stick like that under normal circumstances (mine only did it when it got full of sawdust), so there may be a mechanism issue and there is a fair possibility that you will break the chuck doing this repair. That being said, 30 bucks is reasonable for a new one, and it's not doing you much good jammed like that.

Remove and repair or replace keyless drill chuck

Remove the REVERSE-THREAD screw at the bottom of the chuck. Set the clutch collar to the highest setting, and set the gear to the slowest setting on the transmission. Remove the power source! Get the biggest allen wrench you can fit in the end of the chuck(the shortest leg) and tighten the chuck down around it, allowing the jaws to rest and tighten on the flats of the wrench. Lay the drill on its side(chuck toward you, handle to the left, and allen wrench to the left, horizontal to the deck). Then with a hammer(soft hammer if you care about the allen wrench) quickly and deliberately hit the allen wrench in an attempt to cause the allen wrench to spin counter clockwise. Let me know if this works for you!

Milwaukee keyless chuck drill is closed and I

I'd try using a pair of slip-joint pliers (e.g. brand name example is Channel-lok™ (sp) to get a better grip on the chuck and housing. Try wrapping some scrap rags around under the jaws of the pliers to minimize gouging or other cosmetic damage to the chuck or drill housing.

If I can be of further assistance, or if you have questions about any of my response(s), please let me know before rating me.

If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly. My goal is to earn a "Very Helpful" rating from everyone I help.

I have a Bosch PSR12 12V Cordless drill, but no instructions.

This drill has a keyless chuck. Put your bit in the chuck and hold the collar of the chuck while pressing the trigger in the forward position. To undo the chuck do this in reverse. You can also hand tighten the keyless chuck if you prefer. I have a 1/4' adapter that I keep in my drill so I can change bits quickly.

The screw is a LEFT HAND THREAD and also is LIKELY a Metric size!

Make sure you use a Metric Allen wrench.
