When you say crankshaft stops when cylinders fire I am assuming this is during start. This is caused by a flywheel key problem (Partially sheared) A flywheel key will partially shear if there was a sudden stoppage of the engine. I e. you hit something that stopped the blades right away.

Service manual is here:

Flywheel removal is on page 44 of the file.

I am pretty sure you have a flywheel key problem as this appears to be an engine timing problem and it is firing too soon. (again partially sheared flywheel key causes timing to advance. If there is not a problem with the flywheel key the next suspect would be the mechanical compression release.

A note about flyweel key replacement. Most of them are aluminum or soft metal so that the crankshaft does not shear off with a sudden engine stoppage. Just make sure to use a Tecumseh
replacement flywheel key and not one from an auto parts store.

Thanks for chooding FixYa,

One more note about Tecumseh flywheel keys. On almost all engines with electronic ignition they use an off-set flywheel key. If some one replaced the old flywheel key with a straight key vs an off-set key you will expenience the symptoms you described.

I installed new carb. on my tecumseh 5hp. snow king and it wont start. I have spark and gas is flowing out of carb.

This can be very frustrating and tough on the back and arm.
Always confirm the the fuel tank valve is open and the stop/run switch is in run position

It takes three things to run:
  1. Compression. This is the resistance that you feel as you crank the engine. Some engines have compression release to assist getting the rotation started. You should be able to feel the compression stroke as you rotate, Remove the plug and you can easily tell the deference. If it had, last time used, been running and starting with no problem I would assume that the compression is OK. Gauges are available to check. at lease 120 PSI
  2. Spark. It is near impossible to lose the spark timing on these. It can only be magnitude and presence. If in doubt about the condition of spark plug replace. I usually lay the plug on top of the head with wire attached and observe for the spark. No spark no start.
  3. Confirm that the throttle is in the wide open position. It is possible during the repair the spring or rod has closed the throttle air valve. Air/fuel mixture is always hard to trouble shoot. I use open choke and starter fluid to conform that compression and spark are working. After that I will choke on a cold motor and pull listening for the first fire. At the first fire I would usually half choke and pull to first run. Full choke for many pulls will only flood engine!! If no joy then I would allow engine to vent and go back to start fluid. If it will run on start fluid than either carburetor is messed up or quality of fuel is bad.
If after several tries and fuel is certain to be good remove plug and check for gas. It is possible that the new carb float valve or mixture adjustment screws are messed up.

One cyclnder is not getting gas where can I get the relay or check the one on it

hi here is web site,174

select your model from the list let it open and save a copy if it lets you or make a note of website

please check that inlet and ex push rodes are opening and closing the valves , on the non operating cyl

please check for valve clearance

does it has compression on that cyl ?

does it have spark on that cyl ?

is this engine a twin carb unit and do they have soleniods at the bottom each carb if so i suspect the solenoid on the non operating cylinder is not getting 12 volt to open the fuel flow

as a test use 2 wires and connect 12 volt + battery lead to 1 pin in connector to solenoid and connect other negative black lead to the other wire in the connector ( this should activate solenoid & open the fuel flow ) you have to get someone to help you

be carefull ie sparks and fuel !!!!!!

try starting and see if now runs on both cylinders iff so faulty solenoid

replace that solenoid

if that does not work and 1st suggestions are all ok i would then look at the carby for the cylinder that is not operating
it copuld have a blockage etc have a look and let me know

cheers paul

2004 v twin 16 hp 500hours on it runs but spits fuel throught carb when giving gas runs like its missing on one cylinder replaced carb, plugs, fuel filter, it has 120 lbs of compression in each cylinder...

You should take one of the heads off and look at the valves. You may have deposits building up no the valves.

120 pounds compression sounds pretty good for a six year old engine with 500 hours on it. It probably started life at 9 to 1 and now is around 8 to 1.

Fuel will not go to carb.take fuel line off and crank it over the fuel pours out of the line, the only way it starts is if you pour gas into it directly

carb float valve stuck not letting fuel into carb body sometimes a light tap on carb may free it up or may have to be removed and cleaned and or float may need to be repaired or replaced

Will not shut off

Appears the ground wire on the carburetor came off. You can kill it by shorting out the spark plug with a screwdriver to the head or anything metal. Locate the wire to he carb and trace back to where it goes to the ground and make sure you got a good connection.
