Have you considered NOT connecting your camera to your computer? The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

What is the error? Be sure that you have the correct drivers installed or have installed the software that came with the camera.

My Nikon Coolpix L20 camera keeps telling me that my batteries are exhausted after one shot. The batteries are new and I have used two different pair with the same result.

I went to the Nikon website and was told it was a 'firmware' issue that had been resolved. However, their solution is to download the firmware onto your SD card and upload it onto your camera, which you CANNOT do because it doesn't read the battery. Sent them an email, if I find a solution I will post it.
I don't think I will buy another Nikon digital camera. I thought they were the best. I think that was in the past.

Press left on the multiselector (marked with a one-handed clock). Use up/down to select ON from the menu and press OK. The self-timer will fire the shutter ten seconds after you press the shutter release button.

You can't. The camera is designed to record pics and videos, not stream them to a computer.
