Are you using the corfect serger system needles in it? Most domestic sergers will take the regular domestic needle 130/705X but work best with a serger needle with has a groove down the front as well as the regular back scarf. This helps with the thread pickup from the looper by the needles. Sergers also run much faster than domestic sewing machines so the tolerances are very fine.

My Bernina came with ELX705 needles and it does run better with these in it. Also you need to use mid size needles, don't go too small, probably a size 80 or 90 is best.

Check out this page for some good info as the different serger manufacturers do have their own recommended needle sometimes. http://sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page78.html

Always refer to your manual (or ring the manufacturer if lost) to double check what needle they recommend be used in your serger, it does make a difference.

First thing to try is installing brand-new sharp needles in your serger. Second thing is to re-thread all the threads in the proper order specified in your owner's manual. If you don't thread correctly, your serger will probably never serge properly.

WHy is my Husqvarna Viking 560 serger is skipping stitches????

Here are a few things to try.
1. Make sure that correct type of needles are being used, both are the same size, and that the needle size matches the fabric weight. This is the first serger to use 15X1 needles.
2. Make sure that the needles are installed correctly and are pushed all the way up. Have you replaced the old needles with new ones, not other used ones?
3. Thread has a shelf life, it can expire over-night. Just to eliminate this possibility, replace all threads with fresh good quality serging thread (and not just another spool which was purchased some time ago).
4 It sounds like you have re-threaded the serger correctly according to manual instructions. Here is a sure fire method:
- thread the upper looper and place the thread behind the needles under the presser foot. Make sure that the thread is lying firmly between the tension discs.
- thread the lower looper (the tricky one). Check that the thread is between the tension discs as before and place the thread over the upper looper and then behind the needles, and under the presser foot.
- thread the needles, checking that the thread is between the corresponding tension discs. Place the thread under the presser foot.
5. Check stitch length.
6. Check if the problem persists with other fabric types, use two layers. If the problem occurs with only a particular fabric, then the cause is incorrect needles.
7. Check tips on both upper and lower loopers. They should be free of burs, smooth, and have a semi-sharp point.
Hopefully this will solve your problem, if not it may be time to have it inspected by a qualified technician.
Please rate how effective were these suggestion in solving your problem, it is important to me.

I have an elna 664 serger and I am experiencing skipped stitching. I am sewing thicker fabric, so I am assuming this might be the problem, but not sure. I was told it might be my timing but I am not sure...

SKIPPED STITCHES ON A SERGER
1. Is the needle bent or worn--replace
2. Is the needle inserted correctly into the needle holder--check needle
3. Is the Serger threaded correctly--rethread
4. Is the presser foot pressure right for the fabric--adjust
5. Possible timing problem--need to be checked at a sewing machine shop

My brothers serger is skipping stitches

Many problems can cause a serger to skip. Start with the correct new needles and good quality thread. Skips can be tension a clearance or timing issue or the amount of thread pulled out by the thread guides. This is not something most consumers can repair. Even with the service manuals they can be difficult. I have spent thousands of hours working on sergers.and skipping at high speed can be difficult to solve. Some brands are more user friendly to service. This like will show some of the common settings and tools needed for a serger service.

I have re-threaded, changed needles, adjusted the differential and cutting width but cannot sew a single seam without the stitches skipping, sometimes several in a row and sometimes only one.

Left needle on baby lock serger "imagine" skips

Change needles if they have done a few hours. Ales use ballpoint if seaming stretch fabrics. Also you can get EL 705 needles, which have a longer scarf (groove at back) which helps with the loopers catching the needle thread. Or SUK is the stretch type with this longer scarf Also if you are using cheaper thread cones, try a better quality with smoother finish and consistent weight, this will help too. However if this doesn't resolve issue, your looper timing might need adjustment.

I own a Bernina 2000DE Serger which I purchased new many years ago. I've never had ANY trouble with it, and am quite experienced with sergers. However, when doing quite a bit of sewing on fleece the last...

Has it been serviced at all during your ownership of the serger?

The loopers can be knocked a little out of timing resulting in the skipped stiches on the heavy weight fleece occassionally. It sounds like you have tried all the usual fixes and know what you are doing.

Only other thing that might cause skipped stitches could be using a sharp needle rather than a ball point on the fleece. Otherwise maybe time for a trip to the shop??
