Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a Seanix LCD tv, RX series. It's 2-3 year old. I am trying to understand whether or not it is a digital machine, i.e. does it have a digital tuner. The manual is unclear on that. I am in Canada where local stations are not yet broadcasting digitally. I use cable. They say they provide an analogue signal. They convert US digital signals to analogue. Of course my machine works with these allegedly analogue signals. I have also used an antenna which picks up local stations, which are certainly analogue. Again the tv works fine with them. I have not been able to pick up US signals, as far as I can tell. So maybe my tv works with both analogue and digital? Or maybe its just analogue? Thanks, John Ellis Victoria, B.C. Canada

Your remote control should have a button to select the Source signal, which should bring up a menu with the list of available soures. If Digital or DTV is shown as one of the soures then you should be able to select this and attempt to tune in the digital signal. If this is not present in the source list then your TV is unlikely to be digital. A digital TV remote control will also have extra buttons for digital TV e.g. GUIDE, SUBTITLES, EPG.

How to record to my Sony SLV830 VCR from Sony Bravia 32" after digital switchover

You can't really record from the TV while watching something else. The only way to do that is to have two tuners. What you would need to do is get another converter box and connect that to the VCR, via the second VCR socket. But as you have a Satellite box, you will need to find a scart switching box like the one shown below (try Amazon for them).
This will allow you to connect all your items to the one TV.

Breaking down after 3 years is about right for LCD TV. It sounds like the T-CON board has gone out. Does the on screen menu look normal?

It could be expensive/uneconomical in terms of professional workshop repair/replacement parts, due to the age of the set, and the availability of suitable generic components.

Because this set is 10 years old or so, servicing by a qualified SONY technician might not be economical; if you wish to obtain a quote on the repairs to this one - the technician can assist you further in greater detail as to the root cause of the original fault(s) and the likely costs involved as well as offering a second opinion as to whether it is worth fixing or not.

Personally in terms of economy and experience I would recommend replacing the whole TV with a newer series model, with an optional extended manufacturer's warranty. People are throwing CRTs out nowadays anyway to make way for plasma/LCD/LED TVs with more advanced features. But it's up to you, and if you do decide to get this fixed for an agreed quote, it could be very expensive.

Many service centres are steering away from repairing TVs with picture tubes, and focusing more on smaller appliances, such as digital audio/computers/iphones etc.

I had the same problem with a Magnavox LCD TV. It would not turn on and the light on the external PSU flashed. I found a replacement 12V 5A power supply on EBAY. It brought the set back to life.

Canon A75 No startup sound & display on LCD, rest of things works fine

Think it might be your batteries. 700mah batteries are pretty weak by today's standards (most are at least 2,500 mah these days). I'm guessing your batteries are several years old? If so, they're really only meant to have a usable shelf life of a few years, whether they are used or not. Recommend trying a new set of rechargeable batteries.
