SOURCE: Cub Cadet 2165 engine surges and eventually stalls

If this is a Kohler engine, the surging is probably from the engine starving for fuel. Try replacing the fuel pump.

It is probably the fuel pump. If I remember the number correctly, this fuel system needs about 50 lbs to open a valve.
Until this valve opens, no fuel gets to the fuel nozzels.

SOURCE: Craftsman 16.5hp 42 in. Mower runs for about

I am having a problem with my lawn tractor similar to what you describe. Mine runs fine for 15 to 20 minutes and then stalls. It will start back up and run for a few minutes and then stall again. When it stalls it is like when you get off of the seat with the blades engaged. I have replaced the gas and fuel filter and have cleaned the carb and air cleaner with no effect on this problem. I am now thinking that the problem is the fuel stoper located at the bottom of the carb. There is a plunger screwed into the bottom of the carb bowl that is held down when the key is turned on. If you get off of the seat when the engine is running and the brake is not on or the blades are engaged the stoper is pushed up into the main jet fuel path causing the engine to stall. I am going to fabricate a heat shield around this plunger to see if this corrects the problem.

Check valves. Vacuum from the engine draws the fuel in...sounds like vacuum is surging. Also it may have a "fuel pump" that may be bad

If fuel is getting into the oil, I would say the needle and seat or float in carb is not stopping fuel flow. I would check carb again and adjust float level. Change or install an inline fuel filter too. Surging is almost always carb related. If problem persists after checking carb again, check governor springs. If they have been bent at all after removing carb, they can be bad. If you replace new governor springs and surging still exists, try doing a static setting on carb/governor. If your unit has an oil/centrifugal governor, move governor arm in the direction that opens throttle valve in carb all the way, hold in place, loosen nut on governor arm and grab small tang that goes inside engine and turn in the same direction you moved governor arm, rotate this until it stops, hold in place and tighten nut on bottom of governor arm. This is called a static/factory setting. Make sure throttle cable is in high position when doing this. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

My Briggs and Stratton 300 148 cc lawn mower surges up and down while running. Seems to run best when almost out fuel

You most likely have a partially clogged carb (main jet) and it isn't allowing enough fuel for the engine to run smoothly. This is fairly common. The carb needs to come off, get disassembled, and cleaned paying close attention to the small opening in the main jet.

My 13.5 ho b&s surges heavily but smoothed out when blade/ deck is engaged or when I apply choke. I've twice cleaned carbs and still now working. I ran in garage with no air filter to elimina

hello sir, mower will not start or run, runs only when primming, does it have good spark, good compression,or only runs on full choke, are you getting fuel to the engine if not try this, your fuel pump or your carb. is clogged up here is what you can do for a simple repair for the carb, you can remove the air filter and assy, empty fuel tank and clean out tank and line, remove the bowl nut and bowl careful of the gaskets, now spray carb cleaner in the small port holes in the carb steam in the middle of the carb until clean, now spray the bowl nut holes until clean there are three, after cleaning put bowl on the same way you removed it with dip towards front of float, put bow, and fresh gas,you should be good to go,hope this helps.,thank you.~~

Briggs & stratton 550 / surges, gas hog

check your air filter. If it's clogged, the engine will spool up to keep from dying, run for about 15 seconds, then it will happen again. If that's it, just clean the air filter. Solved my problem

My troybuilt lawn moer. won't start. changed fuel filter, plugs, fuel pump. fuel mkes it to the bowl on the bottem of the carb. engine will run if i put fuel though carb.v twin clylinder engine. Briggs

You didn't list what engine you have. Depends on what motor and carb, but you'll have to remove the bowl. If your bowl is round with a special brass hex bolt holding it on , then be sure the passage in the bolt is open fully. Next the passage it screws into must be clear. In anycase you will probably have to remove the carb and clean every passage throughly.
