Question about HP Pavilion N5415 Notebook

Replacing Norton with anything else

I have an HP Pavillion a1410y desktop. I use Norton Online Protections which came with my AT&T Yahoo ISP install. When the virus scan runs, it's slow and eats up all the resources to the point that I just have to walk away and let it run (up to 1 1/2 hours!!) Since installing this latest version of Yahoo and Norton, it now takes anywhere from 5 to 8 minutes to boot up. This is unacceptable and I've been putting up with it waaayyy too long. Also, when Live Update runs, everything else slows to the point of total aggravation. Again, I have to just walk away.

Too late to make a long story short, but---- how can I get rid of Norton and with what should I replace it? I'm OK with having AT&T Yahoo as my browser, but I'm not going to die if I use IE or Firefox, etc.

Thanks. Marti

You're the best. The startup time improved from 5 - 8 minutes to 3 minutes or less. CCleaner found about 180 items that SammSoft Advanced registry Optimizer did not find. Do I now need to uninstall the SammSoft program?

Norton is a real pain, and can be a bigger pain to get rid of. First, go to filehippo.com and download CCleaner, and also download AVG, but save the AVG download to the desktop. After removing Norton you will be using AVG for your antivirus. Once you have the CCleaner installed, open the tools section on the left. This is an uninstaller, it works considerably better than the add/remove programs section of Windows. Remove anything that reads Norton. This is where it may get tricky, Norton has a couple of blocking programs built in that try to keep you from using another antivirus, or removing Norton. So, the uninstall may run the first try, or you may get a message to the effect of the updater is running. If you get this message, then you will need to open Norton, go into the settings, and turn off everything. Then try the uninstall again. Once you've uninstalled all Norton related programs, run the registry cleaner. Norton likes to leave a little blocker in the registry that prevents the install of other antiviruses. Noe that this is done, you're ready to install the AVG. NOTE at one point there will be a section that will install the AVG internet toolbar, uncheck this box, you don't need it, and once it's installed you can't remove it without removing and reinstalling AVG. Some finer points about AVG is very little maintenance,it updates automatically, will scan at a time preset by you, so as to not hinder your use at the time of the scan, it protects against spyware and adware along with the antivirus, and has real time internet security without using hardly any resources. I believe you will be happy with it. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

I would remove the SammSoft program. Also, delete anything that is in the start section of the start menu/programs. These are only short cuts, and will not effect the program. A clear start section will shorten the start up time even more.

Norton security disc will not fit in HP laptop. Hole in disc too small.

Don't worry. You can download and install the Norton Internet Security from the link www.norton.com/nis11 and download the installation file to your desktop.

Once the download has been completed, double click the setup file that you've downloaded.
Follow the simple installation steps to install the latest version.

After the installation, the program will prompt you to enter the product key to register the product.

Copy and paste your product key from the CD sleeve to activate your Norton program.

That's all, dude.

Muhaim

Wireless internet connection issue

Hi,

Try these steps below.

ø Try to use the website IP address in IE.
ø Disable/Configure Norton Personal Firewall from Norton Internet Security.
ø Disable Windows Firewall.
ø Disable/Enable IE proxy settings, if available.
ø Uninstall Norton by downloading & installing the Norton Removal Tool

If you are not able to connect to the internet after performing these steps then it is not any issue with the wireless and then you need to contact your ISP.

Plz try it and get back..

Regards,

Dreamkam

Do not have a norton 360 icon on desktop only have norton internet secuirty or symantec live update which will not do anything when clicked on ( norton 360 not working on this computer )

Did you purchase the 360 program if so sometimes after you install it wont automatically place an icon on the desktop if you fail to check the little box during installation. If you have purchased it you can locate it in the start menu. Locate the folder and right click to pin a shortcut to the desktop.
