Question about DeLonghi Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore Elite automatic espresso coffee machine with built in grinder, serial number 212014 AB 070312 30367. I understand it is manufactured by DeLonghi and looks like a Magnifica. I have had the machine approximately 2 years. Periodically a red light comes on telling us to decalcify it which we do with vinegar as there is no source of decalcification liquids here. Recently we noticed the rate of delivering coffee has slowed and only drips out taking minutes to fill a small cup. Recently a friend brought us some Dip-it from the US to decalcify the machine. However, the instruction booklet provides no way to decalcify except to wait for the red light. So I experimented by holding down various buttons when starting the machine and finally the decalcifying light came on and I was able to run the cleaner through it. This improved it, but not greatly. I wanted to run a second course of cleaning liquid through it but no matter what buttons I pushed the red decalcifying light would not come on. Worse, the machine began to work very erratically When it is first turned on the initial rinse water through the two spouts continues for a long time, half a cup. After it grinds coffee it takes a long time for coffee to start trickling from the spout and it comes out very slowly. After the cup is a quarter full, the pump stops and the red light that signifies the water tank is empty comes on yet there is still plenty of water in the tank. If I turn the frothier knob counter clockwise to release some water, the tank light goes out for awhile. Essentially, the machine is now unusable. Does this machine have a microprocessor which can be reset to restore the machine to its factory specs? Or has decalcifying with vinegar caused a problem?

Makes perfect sense. Good answer. (I was a Jaguar mechanic 30 years ago.) Now to find somebody to check the pump.

    Thank you.

Tons of people arouind the world use vinegar to decalcify their coffee machines so this is definitely not the problem. Get an expert to take a look at the units pump as this seems to be the main problem.

Tons of people around the world have used vinegar to decalcify their coffee makers for years therefore the problem has not been caused by vinegar. In my opinion the pump seems to be one of the problems with your unit.get an expert to take the unit apart and get the pump serviced or if possible replaced this should help the flow of the coffee as well as the sensor problem of empty tank would be solved. In the process of cleaning you can also get the expert to help you clean the components with cleaning liquid to make the unit feel as good as new instead of waiting for decalcifying light.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

Door from grinder will not let coffee into brew unit

From the description I understand that the flap at the outlet from grinder is not easy to open and let coffee grounds out from the grind chamber.
Firstly this is a mechanical obstruction and not related to any electrical or electronic control.
This happens frequently in the Ceramic burr grinders due to the following reasons:
1- The beans used are dark roast oily. Such beans are not good for use i any fully automatic model. This should be stopped immediately.
2- The grind fineness may be set at fine powdery level. This is done because there is wrong assumption thata fine grind makes stronger espresso. That is not applicable in fully automatic machines. The extraction of espresso in fully automatic machine is with pre infusion (also called pre brew soaking) and uses a back pressure valve for 9 bar extraction pressure. For this reason
the coffee grounds should not be finer than table salt grain. If coffee fineness is set at powdery fine, then the setting should be changed to coarser setting.
3- Grinder may not have been cleaned for an extended period. If so clean the grinder. Use brush or scrape solid deposits in corners and crevices to clean.
Finally as a part of cleaning, use a rag wrapped on finger or screw driver to wipe the invisible oil deposits on the grinder parts between the burr and the outlet.
Check the flap in the coffee outlet is hinged correctly and moves freely front and back to make sure that it is not blocking outlet for ground coffee.

What do I do when coffee beans not getting to grinder

They cannot "not get to" the grinder, the hopper is mounted directly above the grinding teeth. The grinder is probably blocked and you will need to remover the housings and take out the grinder for cleaning and inspection. Most common cause of grinder blockage is dampness inside the housings from a leak somewhere inside the machine.

My Kenmore Elite grinder and coffee brewer ground this morning, but then would not brew. Any ideas? The machine stayed on but never made another sound.

Try cleaning the chute from the grinder to the basket. Coffee oils build up and plug the chute. I clean mine every 3 - 4 days and have had no problems.

Gaggia Platinum Vogue Built in Grinder

Just use the whole bean. Using pre ground coffee through your grinder will screw the blades completely.
However if you have a decaff option that allows you to put coffee directly into the brewer that would be ok........just dont put it into your hopper that feeds the grinder.
