Question about Sony Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Have a Sony PS-T2 direct drive TT. The tonearm drops in the middle of the LP rather than the lead-in groove and I can't get it to work right.

It sounds like it's been set up to play 7 inch records, check to see if there anything in the instructions on record size selection.

After an album side is finished, my Thorens TD 185 turntable disc refuses to stop spinning.

Some turntables do not return the arm to the rest. However if it did so previous then something could have broken or become out of place underneath the turntable. The only way to check is look under the turntable by removing the base and looking for signs of damage.

Hi, at the left side of the tonearm base you will find a grommet or hole. Insert flat blade screwdriver and adjust to set correct start stop position. Cheers John.

Need to buy a turntable for my husband this week. I am overwhelmed with customer reviews and need an expert to advice me. My budget is 800 including cartridge. I am looking for great sound, but someone...

If poppa has a clue about audio he'll know how to digitize any source he has into the laptop. You shouldn't necessarily try to get that capability built-in to just one component. What about the rest of them? That function should be higher up the audio foodchain.

Whatever you buy make sure your existing electronics can support it.

"PHONO" is the only designated connection on an audio device that is literal and exclusive. Nothing but PHONO will work right on it and old-school turntables would require it to preamplify and frequency-correct the tiny current produced by a Phono cartridge. Look up RIAA equalization.

If your electronics doesn't have a PHONO connection AND your TT doesn't have a self-contained preamp you will have to get a Phono Preamp to connect between the TT and any Line Level input, like Aux.

I'm partial to Dual (the brand) turntables but maybe hubby wants something that has USB for direct PC attachment. Modern TT's made for ripping LP's put more into the ripping than the 'turning' and 'tracking' and usually lack heavy platters for speed stability, fine tonearms with adjustments and better phono cartridges/sytlus for maximum capture of the information in the groove with minimum damage for optimized playback. You need to do some intelligence gathering to see what he wants and needs.

$800 will get a lot of turntable.

SONY PS-LX56P turntable sounding very quiet when attached to a mini Sony hifi, even though our other turnable sounds fine on it.

Not knowing the electronics I'd imagine a close listen would reveal it's actually tinny as well as quiet. You probably need a Phono Preamp (Google it).

My Sony PS-LX520 gets stuck in grooves on the LP. What should I do to fix the problem?I checked in a local audio store. They suggested changing the needle. Will this help ?

It might, however if the LP is damaged or got something stuck in the groove no. If it only does it on one LP and no others then, again the answer is no. However if any other record shows signs of poor sound then the stylus might indeed need changing.
If you need a good record cleaner (that gets rid of static too) try the website below. I use the cleaner all the time it's good stuff.

When i play both my Stanton STR8-150, i can hear a lot of audio coming from the stylus area.. its very noticeable in the backround when the amp is turned on or off... im not sure if the needles are worn,...

If you're close enough and there is very little ambient noise in your listening room it would be possible to hear the airborne vibrations of a stylus in a groove. Be aware that IT can also 'hear' and react to other airborne and surface vibrations in the real world. Welcome to the analog world.

I doubt that excessive tracking force (within reason) would make LP playback audible. If you were playing an LP on an old Victrola Talking Machine that uses a sharpened railroad spike as a sytlus, well, maybe.

For a manual, go to http://www.retrevo.com, register and download it and many other manuals for free. I used >> Stanton STR8-150 << as a keyword.

The manual refers to a "tone arm and cartridge settings" section that I can't see.

To adjust the static balance of the tonearm precisely within its 2-5 gram limit (see the specs for your cartridges) get yourself a Shure SFG-2 (a search on Retrevo shows several for under $20) and follow its directions. You will have to make slight adjustments to the tonearm counterweight to achieve the desired tracking force.

Difficulty balancing the tone arm on kd-1033 turntable.

A new stylus should not change the tone arm balance setting if it is the correct stylus.

Does your arm have a sliding balance weight at the rear of the arm? If so you can slide this slightly towards the cartridge to regain the correct playing weight.

I would suggest you get a repair shop to do this for you, or you could finish up damaging your records.

Technics SL 1600 MK2

Your tonearm is damaged. More than likely the bearings on the tonearm have been damaged. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this. You'll have to have the tonearm replaced, however, parts for the SL1600MK2 have been discontinued. The tonearm for the SL1200MK2 might fit it, but you will need to do some retro-fitting in order to make it work properly. Something only a qualified service center could perform.

Hope this helps some.

Good luck!
