Question about Hamilton Beach 40894 Electric Kettle

Open Question

The lever to turn the kettle on (after filling it with water and placing it on the charging stand) doesn't stay down anymore. As a result, it can't heat anything. I tried taking it apart but one of the screws is really weird, and not really removable by a normal screwdriver.

SOURCE: Digital Display no longer showing, lever won't stay down

jsullivan22 is right about the diode. I have this problem with my 24502, which is a dual version of this. There are 2 circuit boards in your unit one with the LED display on it and another one. The diode needing replacing is on the other board. it is in the center of the board, right next to a large (1/2W or 1W) 2K ohm resistor. The diode is probably part number 3ez24d5. Test it with the diode test on your DMM, if it is bad you will get 0V both directions (I think). Also if you measure it with the Ohm function it will probably measure less than an Ohm (check the zero on your DMM as many are not accurate down this low) You can probably replace it with a 1N5934BG or a 1N5359BG Mouser stocks both of these (currently). I haven\'t gotten my parts so I can\'t guarantee these will work, but I\'m pretty sure. I will try the latter first as I\'m hoping it\'s higher power rating will keep it from burning out again, although I will be buying several spares.

This is clearly a design issue with these toasters and one that could be easily corrected. Both circuit boards in my toaster are very toasty in the area of these diodes, although I\'m sure the fact that these boards are mounted very close to the heating elements doesn\'t help their longevity.

Hope this helps everyone.

How to clean out your stovetop kettle

I've been using the same kettle on my stove for about a year and I hadn't cleaned it even once until last week.
A while ago I started noticing these weird white chucks that would come out with the water but I just figured that it was because I get a lot of use of out my kettle.
It turns out that the white chunks are actually limescale.
I did some research on it and thankfully limescale is not harmful to ingest. However, it's pretty gross to look at and I certainly wouldn't want to serve a cup of tea to a guest that is filled with strange white flakes.
So I figured out how to clean my kettle with stuff I have at home.
All you need is some regular cooking vinegar to do the descaling for you.
There is no need to buy expensive chemicals that you wouldn't feel safe using on a cooking product anyway.
Start by rinsing out your kettle with warm water.
Then, fill half of it with water and the other half with vinegar.
Place it on your stove and let it come to a rolling boil.
Then, just leave it there over night.
When you wake up in the morning, dump out the water and vinegar solution.
Take a long scrubbing brush and scrub the inside of the kettle to remove whatever limescale is left.
If there is still some caked on, you can repeat the steps over again.
If your kettle is clear of the grime, simply rinse out a number of times with soap to get rid of the vinegar taste/smell.
Voila! Your stovetop kettle is clean and no more unidentified chunks in your tea!

Kettle base got water .keeps blowing....how do i solve problem

For the kettle's black 'charging' base:
Unplug this charging base immediately. Let it dry out completely. If you have an air hose, contact cleaner or Electronics Duster (compressed air) to displace the water.

If you're kettle stopped working after its fully dry (wait a day to be safe), make sure it's still unplugged and check the contacts in the base center for corrosion (there's the center ground pin and if you push down on it's spring-loaded ring around the ground pin you'll find two more inner/outer circumferential contacts). If you see corrosion try to clean them with a cotton swab (like Q-Tip) and alcohol and retry.

For the kettle's stainless steel 'pitcher' base:
It's the same as above but you'll need to expose the bottom for best results and to find out where's this water it leaking from.

You'll need to remove the 3 Phillips screws and one safety-screw with a "spanner insert bit" on your driver. If you don't have access to one of those and your kettle leaks when filled then I'd bet it's cheaper to replace than to repair, sorry.

My electric kettle is starting to break.

It sound like the temperature sensor that switches the kettle off when it has reached the correct temperature is faulty. It would probably be cheeper to replace than repair

Aroma AWK-161 Water Kettle not turning on

A power outage happened and all of a sudden Aroma kettle was not turning on. I tried different outlets that I knew worked... nothing. So, problem was certainly the kettle. I gave some good sold raps to the base of the kettle and then some to the base that plugs into wall. Walla! The kettle is now working. I pray it continues. And, from now on I'm unplugging base after each use :)

Hi, i have a Bosch TDS2551GB steam generator iron. It needs descaling but I don't know how and there does not appear to be a descaling button. How do I proceed ?

Hi, Descaling is simply a process where the limestone that is deposited in any water cooking device is removed.
Have a look inside your electric kettle to see how much of a problem ypou have in your area.
If you have a serious problem & your kettle element is totally covered up with a whitish coating, I suggest you buy a can of commercial descaling agent.
If not, or iof you prefer home remedies, get a bottle of white vinegar.
Empty your kettle & pour a bit of vinegar onto the limestone. If it boils & foams, it is being dissolved. Replace the vinegar everytime it stops or slows down. Look at the results. You can speed it up by heating the kettle. Do not boil the kettle with vinegar. (Weak acid) Rather dilute it 50-50 I then boil. Or, just boi;l some water & throw it out. Then put the acid on. once you figuted out what process is suitable for getting rid of your areas's limestne, then applie your knowledge to your Bosh.
Just let the acid stand inside it overnight, or get more drastic if neccessary.

The lever that turns the water on doesn't stay up. Can't lift the handle halfway to get a little water because the handle falls to the off position.

Sounds like the collar that locks down the stem is in need of tighting to get some resistance to hold handle in place.
Remove handle to acces this collar and to tighten.

How do I clean

Fill kettle until 3/4 full with 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water. Boil and allow to stand overnight.

Empty solution from kettle. Fill the kettle with clean water, bring to boil and discard water. Repeat and the kettle will be ready for use.

Or you can use a proprietary kettle descaler, which is available at most hardware stores.

Fill with clean water to fill line. Have base plugged in. Place kettle on base and press down button on top of handle. Water should boil quickly and turn off automatically when done.
