Dear Schonaldo, Thank you indeed for your reply. I phoned Bissel to locate a service centre close by as I did not have the expertise to do any repairs. The Bissel call centre referred me to their in-house service people who confirmed your finding that the machine is gravity fed, however they also suggested that sometimes there is a problem because of an air lock. Their suggested solution was to fill the tank and depress the trigger a few times and, if this did not work, to hold the trigger down for a period. It took me a day or so to get back to the machine and it could have been that the air lock was dispelled by time, however, when I re-filled the tank and depressed the trigger everything started working again. I wonder also whether I may have put too much cleaner solution into the tank, which may could have further exacerbated an airlock situation. Alternatively, I notice that the air vent at the top of the tank is very small and I have inserted a needle to open it up a little, thereby creating more pressure. Anyway hoorah - everything is working OK.

SOURCE: Broken handle release
Most times they don't break, it is the 2 screw holes at the back that back and the top will raise up from the base. If this is the case, remove the 2 screws and install longer ones with a flat washer on them to fashen down the top. But first the top will have to be removed to put the handle release in the right spot. You would probably look at around $60 to repair, unless the top needs replaecment, then it would be more parts.

Foot pedal broken

I have Bissell Power Steamer Clear view IIII #3105403. I let someone borrow it (mistake #1) and he over extended the foot pedal that angles the upright during use. The pedal is still connected, but the power steamer is locked in the upright position. There is also a bit of dirty water in the bucket, and i cannot empty it because it's basically locked in now. HELP
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
Sorry you are having a problem with your Bissell, it sounds like he bent the handle release lever and you either need to bend it back or replace it depending on the level of damage to the item. Please feel free to contact the Bissell factory to see the best way to fix the problem, it is not an expensive fix however so contact your local vac dealer or get a referral from the Bissell factory for the nearest Bissell authorized dealer in your area.
So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

There is no release, the part is a plastic handle release lever, you can find those at www.hesco.com, the cost is approximately 2.29 each, I have replaced more than 20 of these on the commercial vacuums for my cleaning crew, the part is easily broken and easily replaced. I always have 6 or more on hand.
Turn the vacuum over, remove the bottom plate, with a flat head screw driver punch out the old part. turn the vacuum upright again after the broken part is removed. With the body laying back on a hard surface, carefully push in the new part. Unfortunately, these are plastic, too bad they cannot design a more sturdy part for this.

I had this problem once before. The only thing I did was loosen the back 2 screws, take the release latch and just play with it until it catches, rea simple.
