I have Brothers XL-3100. When I sew, the machine comes unthreaded. The thread does not seem to have been cut. I am an apprentice. This is odd to me. Thank you.

You may be sewing to fast or your tension may be off. Check in side the bobbin casing for any loose thread peices.

The top tread breaks after about 1inch when trying to do chain stich on my janome cover stich machine

Could be the result of several things. There could be some gunk or threads stuck in the tension disk. Be sure to remove the thread and rethread from the beginning in the order specified. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading!!!! If you haven't tried a brand new needle, do so, and make sure it is pushed all the way up and installed with the flat side facing the correct direction. Some machines recommend #90 as the largest needle to use. Also, perhaps the needle eye is too small to accommodate the thread. Watch where the thread is breaking to give you an idea of where the problem may originate. Try a different brand of thread. Sometimes black thread causes issues because the heavy dye affects the thread. Set the tensions at the midway point and then loosen the tension on that one needle. There could also be a burr or rough spot somewhere along the threadpath that is catching the thread. Last idea--could be a timing issue.

Sewing Machine Thread Keeps Breaking

1 Answer

The thread continues to break

Install a brand new needle--one that matches the type of thread and fabric you are sewing. If the thread is shredding at the needle, then the needle's eye may be too small for the thread.

All About Needles

Avoid using old or bargain bin thread. Try a different type of thread.

Check that the thread is threaded correctly in the machine and that it is not wrapped around the thread spool or a thread guide. Also, set the upper tension to the midway point, ie the tension could be too tight.

Top thread keeps breaking

Upper thread breaking is usually a sign of incorrect threading or tension too tight, although there are other possible problems:

When threading the upper thread, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot so the thread will seat properly in the tension disks. Avoid old thread or bargain bin thread. If the thread is fraying and breaking at or near the needle eye, then try a different type of needle with a larger thread groove that will protect the thread from fraying on rough fabric. Also, check that the thread is not hanging up on something, ie the slit on the side of the spool where the thread tail is stored.

My thread keeps breaking, Ive checked and changed my needle, re-threaded bobbin and upper but every time I try to sew the upper thread breaks.

Have you tried loosening the upper tension? Remove the upper thread, RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning (make sure it follows the correct thread pathway). Sometimes the upper thread jumps out of a thread guide or wraps around something. Or try a different brand of thread? Avoid old or bargain bin threads--use good quality thread. Could also be the incorrect needle for the thread/fabric, ie thread too large for the needle eye.

My needle threads keep on breaking, I don't know what to do

  • Check the tension of the upper thread. If it's too tight, the pressure on the thread will cause it to break.
  • Check the thread you are using. If you're using two different kinds (one on top and one in the bobbin) that difference can cause the threads to break.
  • Are you using the proper thread for the job? Using a thin or light thread for sewing heavy fabric can lead to breakage.
  • Are you using the correct needle? Sewing knits with a sharp needle or sewing woven fabrics with a knit or ballpoint needle can also cause the thread to snap.
  • Is your machine threaded correctly? Incorrect threading can be another cause for thread breakage.
I hope this helps.
