Question about Western Digital - My Passport Essential SE 1TB External USB 2.0 Portable - Black Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hi Experts! I was using WD essentials 1TB and till two weeks I was working brilliantly, and all of a sudden the Hard disk drive stopped appearing in My Computer ( I am using windows XP). I can see the HDD in device Manager (MyComputer > Properties > hardware>device Manager) when i connect it to the system, also i can see it in Safely Remove Hardware. But i can't see it in My computer or in Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > disk management. after trying a lot of tings I then tried connecting it with my friend's Window 7 system and I was able to see the HDD in Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > disk management. However, when I tried formatting or partitioning it I received an error saying "initialization media write protected". I have tried so many tools to recover my data but sadly have had no luck. can you help me out here !! thanks salah

There are several walkthroughs on how to recover data

Try loading Windows Recovery Environment on Windows 7 disk

1. First we will be needing a windows 7 dvd (Any windows 7 disk will do ..home, ultimate...etc.)
2. Boot the windows 7
3. under the Install Now windows, click on Repair your computer
4. Choose Command Prompt among the list
5. type Notepad
6. From the Notepad GUI (Graphical User Interface) -> Click File -> Open
7. Open windows will appear
8. Try to path where the external hard drive is in. And select all files that you need to save. By simply copy and paste from where you want to save the files in

Hope this helps

Don't format it yet.

Formatting will delete all your data.

GO TO CONTROL PANEL, CLICK ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, CLICK COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, UNDER STORAGE, CLICK DISK MANAGEMENT. WAIT A FEW SECONDS, THEN ENLARGE THE PAGE. LOOK FOR YOUR DRIVE. SEE IF IT SAYS UNALLOCATED SPACE. IF IT DOES NOT, RIGHT CLICK THE DRIVE, AND SEE IF YOU GET THE OPTION TO MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE. IF NOT GOT TO DEVICE MANAGER, WHICH IS ABOVE STORAGE, CLICK ON IT, LOOK FOR ANY TREE THAT IS OPENED. IF ANY ARE OPENED SUCH AS DISK DRIVES OR AT THE BOTTOM "UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS" DOUBLE CLICK TO OPEN UP. WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS, EITHER UPDATE DRIVER, OR UNINSTALL DRIVER AND DO A REBOOT. My lacie hard disk 1tb all of a sudden isnt

Just contact www.lacie.com great support. their answer for my drive was to reboot the drive. For me it worked.

Follow the procedure below to reset the Network Space to factory defaults:
  1. Move the power switch to the OFF position. Wait for the drive to shut down.
  2. Turn ON the drive.
  3. Within about 3 seconds, flip the switch OFF and On several times.
  4. Immediately turn it ON
If the light flashes quickly, the unit is resetting itself. Attempt to connect to the drive again after about 1 minute using the default username and password (by default, they are both admin.)

My Western digital 1tb wont work inspite of drivers being instal

Mybook does not require any additional driver to work on systems from Win XP onward, same for recents Linux and MAC OS.
If the drive is not detected on more of one computer, then it is usually because of a fault.
Try a replacement cable (mybook uses Mini USB to USB, available at computer and at camera shops). If still no luck contact WD, mybooks have one year warranty. If you want to recover data, the disk must be mounted on a different enclosure, that service can be asked when discussing repair.
