Question about Ovens

I need to replace the touch pad (Part No. WPL 7043P338-60) in a 1991 Magic Chef Gas Range (Model 6498VRV - Serial No. 14343732KY). I have the part and have removed the faulty touch pad but do not know how to obtain easy access to the female receptor behind the front panel of the range so as to be able to insert the male prongs of the new touch pad into the female receptor for that new touch pad. The female prongs are visible through a narrow slot on the front panel, but are too far back merely to insert the prongs with one's hand. I do not beleive one need remove the front panel because the top two screws holding the panel in place are inaccessible. The top of the range blocks those two screws and the operator's manual emphasizes the top is not to be removed or lifted up. Therefore, how do I insert the male prongs of the new touch pad into the female prongs inside the panel? Possibly the intent is to hold the new male prongs piece with needle nose pliers and try to insert those prongs through the narrow slot into the female receptor, although this seems highly awkward and difficult to do without danger of bending the male prongs while trying to insert them. Three years ago a repairman replaced the part and did it easily, although I do not remember how he did it.

The suggestion to check the diagram web site is not useful. Nothing shows how to plug in the replacement touch pad. What I need to know is to how to plug in the replacement touch pad. The only instruction I find for the F-1 error code is "replace the touch pad.' Nothing says how to replace it. D. McPherson

I have a magic chef electric smooth top range. everything works fine, but f-1 keeps appearing with the noisy beep beep beep. Press clear and it gets quiet for about a minute, then starts again! Only way to...

Hello there and thank you for choosing fixya
The f-1 error code is a fairly common problem with these ovens
This is either a controle panel issue or even the touch pad being faulty ok
Here is the test for it to determine which one it is
This simple test will help determine whether the ERC (Electronic Range Control or Clock) or the touch pad is defective when F1 error code is present.

Note: Some models incorporate the touch pad in to the ERC as a single assembly, in which case this test is not necessary. Simply replace the ERC (Clock).

Warning: If you feel in any way uncomfortable performing this test or making this repair, please contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

1. Disconnect power to the range (unplug the range power cord or turn the power off to the range at the circuit breaker). It is very important that the power to the range has been disconnected, so please double check before continuing.
2. Gain access inside the control panel.
3. Disconnect the touch pad (also called keypad or membrane switch) ribbon from the ERC.
4. Make sure there are no lose wires, or anything else that may cause a short when power is turned back on. Assemble the control panel back the way it was.
5. Turn the power back on.
6. Wait for at least one hour to see if the F1 code comes back (usually accompanied by a beeping sound).
7. If F1 comes back, replace the ERC. If it does not, replace the touch pad.

I have a magic chef range. I ran the self cleaning on the range. Now when trying to use the oven I get a F1 and a F3 code. I unplugged it for a while to reset and still have the same problem.

F1 Defective touch pad or clock (ERC) Replace touch pad or clock (ERC). Touch pad is a more common problem. Refer to F1 test at the top of this page for more information. F3 or F4 Shorted or open oven temperature sensor (RTD) Check sensor harness and harness connection between oven sensor and oven control. Replace oven temperature sensor (RTD) if wiring is ok.

What does F1 mean when appearing in the digital display area accompanied by beeping? This is appearing repeatedly every few hours even when stove not in use.

Hello, this indicates a ERC/clock electronic range control fault.
Check or replace the touch pad or clock. The touch pad is a more common problem for this unit. Check for a stuck button by pressing each one and feeling for it retracting. This is easy to replace.

There is a code F-1 appears on the screen along with the beep sound

F1 means defective touch pad or ERC. Turn off the power to the range. Get to the ERC. If the pad and the ERC are incorporated, replace it. If not disconnect the touch pad ribbon from the ERC. Make sure there are not loose wires. Assemble the control panel back. Turn the power on. If F1 comes back - replace the ERC. If not -replace the touch pad. Good luck.
