Question about IBM ThinkPad R40 2722 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a T40 IBM that just got the 1802 error. downloaded a bootable fix that I made to a CD. Set both startup and network to look for the CD drive first. Cannot get past the double beep on the POST test and than get 1802 error spiel. Changed to diagnostic startup, got past the error message but dont think the CD activated. on next page it said to hit Cntrl S but when I do nothing happens. Any ideas on whats happening and what I need to do to get past the start up.

Hello,

To correct this issue, you will need to remove the PCI wireless card from your laptop or disable the mini PCI settings in the BIOS menu.

On IBM's, the Mini PCI card slot is usually at the back of computer.

After removing card or disabling the
mini PCI settings in the BIOS menu, boot your computer. Make sure to update your BIOS. The new BIOS version can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

This issue has been corrected in the latests BIOS updates released.

After updating the BIOS, you can reseat the PCI Wireless card or enable the mini PCI settings in the BIOS menu.

Note that once you have removed the wireless card, you will not have wireless connection until you update the bios and replace it.

Hope this helps.

How do i reload windows from the error 1802 page

all you can do at this point is to continue the rebuild. Inspect the restore CD, if it's dirty, clean it, and retry the install. If the CD has deep scratches, your only option is to try and get a replacement. Could be your drive is bad too. If you have an external drive or another CD drive you can try I would.

Sounds like a non-IBM network card is installed. Remove the card and reboot your laptop.

This is ussually caused by an unsupported WiFi card being installed. You can correct this problem by using a quick BIOS hack... (If you are getting the 1802 error)

How to fix Error 0189

This worked for me on a R40 with the 0189 issue.

When the message pops up, hit escape to continue.

1. Download the IBM Hardware Maintenance Disk and create a floppy. The filename for version 1.75 is i7tm23us.exe. I found it at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/i7tm23us.exe

2. If you do not have a floppy drive on your laptop, then use nero to create a bootable CD from the files and boot sector of the floppy disk.

3. Boot your laptop from the CD, then choose the Assign UUID option.

This should do the trick for you.

Ibm thinkpad T40 Hard Drive change out

After fdisk and format you need to ensure that operative system is installed into yor hard drive. Using ghost you restore the image disk by booting from ghost image CD if you made a bootable image disk. Ensure Bios is set up to boot from CD.
If you used Norton Ghost ensure you captured the image of full bootable original hard disk drive for same computer. If it does not boot after restoring ghosted image, than the image it is probably not complete. If hard disk image is not good, easiest thing to do is using Windows install CD to installl again operative system, then you eventually restore ghost image.

Re: t40 ibm fan error

Are you talking about the original fan being good or the replacement? If it's the original, then your problem may lie with the processor or mainboard. Try the download first, you will need to access another computer to make a bootable disc for the download to clear it. I believe with IBM you can make a bootable floppy or CD. If you have a floppy for your machine, some don't. Once you've made the disc or floppy, you will need to enter the boot menu, and boot from the proper drive. I'm out for the night, but I'll be back in the morning. Let me know.

IBM R40 2722 1802 Error Message

This is due to the fact that IBM laptops have a list of accepted devices, and the pci card is not recognised in the list. On IBM - Amilo, Mini PCI card slot is usually at the back of computer. Locate and remove Mini PCI wireless card, you will not have integrated wireless after this.
Other solution is to find the option to disable mini PCI in bios settings.
Here is how mini pci wireless card looks like:
