Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

My Pioneer DVR-550-HX developed a sound fault yesterday. On DVD playback the sound is muffled, there is a slight background hum and there is a occasional "POP". Also the volume is slightly low. This problem does not occur on HDD recordings. The DVDs perform fine on other machines. Nothing has been rewired or reset.

Where do I get a "pre-amp board", can I replace it myself?? Why does it not affect the HDD programmes?

  • bobnjane May 20, 2011

    Hi there,
I do not have a chance to get a DVD lens cleaner until next week but I will let you know what happens. Another Guru suggested that the pre-amp board had gone and needs replacing - I will try your solution first!!!
    Regards,
    Bob

Hi Bob,
I've suspected that your Optical lens is dirty and/or has a static electricity build-up. To clean the optical lens from these, I would advice you to use DVD lens cleaner and play it to the player. It will help to enhance the picture and sound quality of the player and clean from fine dirt and static electricity. Let me know it the symptoms still persist...

Hello
There is fault in the main preamplifier board [dvd signal preamp]; It is not a repairable board. it should be replaced as card basis. The board can be located at the bottom of the DVD mechanism normally. In some sets it will be fitted seperately. Anyway you can locate it by following the strip wire that goes from laser pickup unit to main board; and that is the one. OK.

Will this burner work on dual layer discs?

Pioneer has released Firmware for the DVR-107D DVD Writer and DVR-A07XLA & XLB DVD Writer. This release # is 1.18.
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/firmware.html
(a ZIP file download, but uncompresses to an .EXE, as does theflashman.rpc1.org site download. I can't uncompress the EXEs with Stuffit (standard) Expander v7.0x here, but Scott said he used version 8.0.2 )
Looks like we are getting closer to Dual Layer Support:
(although some have flashed NEC ND-2500A drives to DL 2510 model firmware, I doubt that Pioneer will release an official firmware update for the 107D to add dual-layer burning. Like other mfrs, I suspect they'll sell a new drive model with DL burning support.)

Audio problem by DVD Play

You need to check to see if the dvd drive is set to digital playback because
it is probably trying to find your on board AC97 - 5.1 digital output. With
a music CD it doesn't have to be connected digitially because it uses analog
for stereo playback but most DVD's - if a movie - are set to playback in
digital. Open 'My Computer', right click on your DVD drive, select
properties, select hardware, highlight your DVD drive, click on properties,
then properties again, check- Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM
device.

DVD Player makes a slight "tick, tick" sound during playback

I would certainly take the unit back cause that noise could be the tracking or focus coils making that noise as they are being overdriver. This could cause the unit to fail prematurly. Its not an adjustment that you can do your self, it takes special equipment and disc
