ERR 99 is a catch all error code that can be caused by many different problems. However, in the original Digital Rebel the usual cause is shutter failure. This part is no longer available.

Hey Lackster,
Error 5 is a problem with the flash. Long story short it thinks there is an external flash attached even though the mechanical pop-up still works. It is repairable.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you.

The flash getting stuch is a common problem with the Canon Rebel ( or Kiss) series. Set the camera in Auto mode in a dim place. Hold the flash unit gently from both sides and try to help it open while pressing the photo button. Do not use force if this does not work the first time - try it again.

Once open, clean the sides of the flash unit in case some dust is causing this problem.

Check that the pins in the camera that connect to the CF card are clean and not bent. You will probably need a good light and a magnifying glass to see into the card slot. If you can see a pin that is bent you could try straigtening it. BEWARE- turn off camera and use a non conducting "stick" ie cocktail or toothpick. Not sure for a Canon but a colleague paid £40 for a new pin assembly for a Nikon with similar problem.
Hope this helps.

Canon, wont focus, dark viewfinder

try cleaning the contacts on the bottom of the lens, where it mounts to the camera body. This is a simple step to take and one that I try to remember to do frequently when I am switching back and forth between lenses frequently. get a magnifing glass and look closely at the contacts on both the lens and body. I have 5 canon bodies and the 75-300 IS lens is one of my favorites. It is ALWAYS mounted on either an XTI or XSI and within arms reach at all times. I have a hook and hang it from the headrest of the passenger seat when driving so that it is always ready at a moments notice. I have never had a problem with that lens.
