MWe have a sharp al-1631, only used for coping of documents. It has been a great! machine and still serves us well. But it is making a very loud grinding noise, almost like nylon gears grinding (I think it is coming from the middle of the right hand side of the multi-bypass door area) When I open the by-pass door I see a few gears on the inside of the hinge side of the unit. And also some gears on the ends of the toner and TD cartridge. Is there a normal problem that happens in this area that I can do something about? Todd

Odds are, that the fuser driver rachet gear is stripped out and you may also have a broken gear on the upper fusing roller. It could be one or both..... You will have to take the fuser unit out and look at the gears. If you do take the fuser out.... Unplug the copier from the wall...... There are just two screw that take the fuser out, you will have to take off the back cover to unplug and remove the fuser unit.... Good Luck

If it sounds like gears grinding it may be the fuser unit. The bushings and gears need replaced or new fuser unit.

A loud clicking sound
This means that a gear is jammed or broken somewhere. Check for waste full and empty or drum waste roller and unblock the jammed toner inside that unit or check fuser gear if broken then replace it.

This might refer to your scanner assy being locked. The scanner assy is the unit under the glass that scans your document prior to copying it. Look inside the cavity where you pick up your completed copies. Look at the upper left corner and see if there is a knob there. If there is, make sure it is in the completely unlocked position.

SHARP COPIER AL-1631
2 things:
1. Fusing Unit has to be replaced- worn or broken gear
and/or
2. Main Drive clutch has to be replaced.

Either way it has to be done by a trained technician.
