Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook

1 Answer

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, model no. PP23LA. My problem is that the system does not recognise the power adaptor/charger & will not charge the battery. The laptop will run with the power supply connected, but the battery is not being recharged. The adaptor/ charger is the original supplied by Dell & has an output of 19.6 Volts DC.

I have updated the BIOS & replaced the battery, but the power adaptor is still not being recognised, even though it will run the computer, as a consequence of this non-recognition, the computer inhibits the charger.

If the battery is not charging, the problem is most likely the battery...not the charger. Check around to see if you can get a battery replacement I think would be your best course of action. If you have a friend with a model laptop with the same battery you could always "test out the scenario" before purchasing one.

Good Luck

My battery is low and when I plug the power cord into the laptop the light that was on on the adapter turns off and my laptop will not turn on. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400

I'm assuming you are using a GENUINE Dell laptop charger designed for this model?

Check the end of the adaptor, if it is the type that has the centre pin, make sure it has not snapped off.
Check the adaptor is putting out 20 volts DC by connecting a multimeter to the outer and inner parts of the DC jack.

Usually, the ac adaptor LED will flash green if there is no charge going to the laptop ("spitting back power"), however, a dead adaptor is often recognised by a lack of the lED light glowing

You can try with a universal adaptor, it will not charge the battery but at least will eliminate the charger or the charging circuit. If this also fails to power up the laptop, then the issue lies with damage to the motherboard

Charger not recognised

Hi,

I believe this is a known problem, all you have to do is to Download and install the BIOS update on the support website support.dell.com . After installing the BIOS update and still the charger is not recognized, it only means the motherboard needs to be replaced as well as the ac adapter. If you are still covered by the warranty, call dell tech support and they will replace the motherboard and ac adapter.

Hope this helps.

I bought a new dell charger and it's not being recognized. It's a PA-12 family charger and in the list is supposed to work with my 1501 Inspiron. Tried bios update.Microsoft ACPI is 6.0.6 already to.

Check in BIOS and see whether its recognised there..If its not, it could be the Motherboard which is the culprit here...if system is Out of Warranty, and its charging, then forget the recognising issue...other Contact Dell's Out Of warranty for repair options.Would suggest using Dell spares for the system than going with other 3rd party supported adaptors

On the long term, a power adapter with a bigger amperage can damage battery and battery charger.

Better to get an adapter with same specs as the 65/70W one , or an original replacemant:

USB DRIVERS FOY DELL INSPIRON 1501

To reinstall USB drivers, you need to reinstall the system, as USB root hub drivers are built in on Windows.

Tray first removing laptop battery and unplugging AC charger for ten or fifteen minutes, this will get rid of static charges that can cause USB not to work.

If that does not solve the problem then you need to reinstall Windows. Try a system restore first.

Replacement battery for Dell Inspiron 1501 won't charge

If your old battery was doing the same (not charging), then is is because the charger is not charging the battery. Do you have a friend with a Dell laptop? Maybe you can use a borrowed charger to test and see if it will charge the batteries. To answer your question , no Dell does not have anything built in to prevent you from using a 3rd party battery.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
