Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I am attempting to help a friend with his NETBOOK that runs UBUNTU replace bit with WINDOWS but although the installation Windows XP Home begins to install it runs for a couple minutes and then I get the blue screen that windows has shut down program to prevent damage to computer. It advises running chkdsk/ f to check disc for errors but we have absolutely no idea how to do this in LINUX. Repeated attempts to install yield the same results. I have tried using Different Windows OS to no avail. These are legitimate Windows disks purchased at retail and I am using a brand new ROSEWILL external player/writer to run the disk. Suggestions please.

I will have to go to his house and write down what it says. I remember it referring to removing external something or other but reading your response brings up that although the UBUNTU came with the computer the hard drive is from one of my dead ACER laptops because after he installed it he needed my password to access it. He may have replaced it under the mistaken impression that changing the HDD would change the OS. I was not consulted before he installed it. He may still have the original HDD if this is the only problem. I can get back to you later today if you still need the message.

Welcome to Fixya

May i know the exact error message that you are getting during the installation? Usually, netbook harddrive is locked to the particular board so that you are not allowed to tinker or reinstall other operating system to the netbook. Manufacturer put it this way to eliminate possible problems in the future if incase user's will be using other OS. I know this process because i am an employee of Lenovo.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Microsoft Update-KB890830 will not install. I update as usual. Message says it is complete. Later it comes back asking me to update. Running Windows XP Home SP 3

Microsoft have stopped sending out updates for Windows XP.

If you are keeping this old OS then simply turn off Windows updates on it, as you won't get anymore anyway.

I cannot install any of OS!

That's a sticky wicket. Windows can be finicky. It might be easier to install an open source OS before installing Windows if you still want to. I have limited experience installing an OS on an Acer D257. I accidently erased WIndows while trying to dual boot Mint. I like Mint 16 better anyway because it doesn't have all the lost time of Windows installing updates and system repair stalls because the battery ran out don't happen etc. Mint is cool and free online for download.

Linux Ubuntu is also free and very easy to install. If you install Mint first then install Ubuntu it is fairly simple to dual boot and have two operating systems.

It is possible to dual boot Windows 7 of course, yet Linux is free online so if you botch it another try doesn't cost anything, while if you lose Windows 7 or Windows 7 Starter and lose the product key it can cost quite a bit to replace it. In some future Universe Windows might make its O.S. available free for home versions and charge a low price annually for using it and receiving upgrades etc. That would make it easier to dual boot with other systems. Mint 16 has everything Windows offers essentially except for the Windows Movie maker. I had a lot of trouble getting the free app movie makers to work in Mint for some reason.

Mint has a lot of free apps that accomplish everything Windows has.

Hello Sir,

I am sure your system meets the normal requirement for installing and using the Ubuntu OS. So you dont have to worry about the system speed and perfomance. I have also sent you the link to download the latest version of Ubuntu OS 10.4 from the original website. All you need to do is download it and burn that image file using nero or any image burning software to the dvd and boot the dvd in your system and install it.

Netbook hard drive problem

Please login to the Computer with the Windows Operating System. Now, open the Disk Management window. Click on Start and select Run. In the Run command box, type Diskmgnt.msc and press Enter.
In the Disk Management window, you can view the 66 GB allocated space for Ubuntu. Right click on 66 GB space and select format. Now, you will get free space for Windows only.

I have original win Xp Home ed. but it is on recovery disk. I changed my motherboard and i could not install my windows from that disk. I want seperate cd of Win XP Home edition.

I'm afraid its a case of buying one. I'd try ebay, the latest version is SP3.

Alternatively you could download and install Ubuntu. Its a free operating system. Google Ubuntu, all instructions are there on the Ubuntu website.

I have run into several issues with installing the OS with a USB on the Acers....I got around it by using an external dvd drive. I picked one up for around 45 bucks on ebay....booted off that and the install went through without incident.

You may need to check to see which "service pack" you are currently on.

See below requirements:

System Software — Windows XP & Vista
  • Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition
    • 32-bit OS Installation Only
  • Windows XP Professional or Home Edition
    • With Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3

  • Not Supported:
    • Windows Vista 64-bit (any version)
    • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
    • Windows XP Media Center Edition
    • Windows 98, Me, 2000, NT, 95, 3.1, DOS

  • Not Tested:
    • Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition
    • Although Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition have not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, there are currently no known issues with Vista Home and Home Premium 32-bit operating systems and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 compared to the supported Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition operating systems.

Windows Vista SP1
There are currently no known issues with Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista based on our initial limited testing and customer feedback. Although full qualification with all Digidesign products has not been completed, we do not recommend against updating to SP1, given the number of important overall system fixes in SP1. We do recommend that you backup your system and create a restore point before updating to SP1, should you encounter any problems after installing the update.
